Newbie w/ ?'s for MFM

Hi everyone, I am the proud expectant mama of triplets!

I am currently 11 weeks and 4 days along and so far all babies seem to have a great heartbeat and are measuring on track based on the u/s from RE's office.  I have my first mfm appointment tomorrow and I must admit that I am getting very nervous about it. I guess I'm so nervous because all of the babies info is based from the RE's office and I'm afraid I'll hear bad news tomorrow.

Any tips on additional questions to ask during the first visit with the mfm?

At the moment I have the following--

How often will I be seen?

Will there be an u/s with each appt?

what is the avg gestation and why? (I have read that avg gestation for trips is 33 but I don't know why. What if I am having the best pregnancy ever, why would you take my babies out at 33 weeks?)

Thanks for any input!

  • Congratulations!!

I would ask them about your nutritional needs-- how many calories should you consume, what foods to focus on, any supplements that may help, weight gain suggestions, if they typically recommend bedrest at a certain point so you can plan for work arrangements, and what # to call after hours if you have concerns.

  • To answer your last question, your placenta(s) can start to deteroriate as the pregnancy continues. It's less risky to take them out early than to keep them in and risk numerous complications. I think 33 weeks is the avg that trip moms make it to, not necessarily when your doctor will induce you/plan c/s. Ask your doctor what hospital policy is for triplets! :)

  • I just went through this last week, so I have a few questions from my list that you hadn't already mentioned.

    Can I exercise?

    Do I need additonal vitamins/supplements?

Do you recommend seeing a nutritionist/dietician?

Is bedrest a requirement at some point or only if medically necessary?

    Is a vaginal birth possible?

At what point would they induce labor/require c-section? (My MFM said no longer than 37 wks, and that is because the placentas start to deteriorate.)

Is having sex okay now and even later in pregnancy?

Should anyone having contact w/babies get Pertussis and Flu vaccines?

Would MFM deliver or would I need to see an OB as well?

When would I get my Rhogam shot?  (I'm rh-, DH is +)

Is going to a chiropractor still safe?

What weight gain will he recommend?

My triplets are identical twins and a fraternal triplet, so I also had questions re: TTTS and how that will be monitored.

You're going to get a lot of information at this appt.  I had my pen and notebook ready.  And be prepared for the selective reduction talk.  We already knew what we wouldn't reduce, but hearing them mention getting rid of our babies (in our case, they'd get rid of the twins) was upsetting.  Good luck!

  • Ladies, thank you SO much for replying. All of the questions you guys brought up are great questions.  I can't believe they had not crossed my mind!
