I used a hand-me-down breast pump from DH's cousin. Worked fine, but I bought new parts. I basically just used the motor which in itself is expensive. It worked for me because I am a SAHM and wasn't building up too much of a stash (I liked to have maybe 20 four ounce bags at a time) but I didn't have to buy a new one. Really, if you buy new parts it will still be cheaper than buying a brand new pump--just something to consider.
I did get some hand-me-downs that had stains all over them and that bothered me some, but I just didn't use them.
My SIL offered me her leftover giant pads she got from the hospital after her birth last year. Why she still had these and thought I would want them, I have no clue.

Honestly? I would take these. You are going to need 9,000,000 and can only steal so many from the hospital. I actually still have extra from when my son was born 2 years ago and will definitely use them again this time.

This was my thought. Buuuuut, I actually didn't use the giant pads until a few days later. Day one of recovery I made DH go out and buy me adult diapers. Yes, diapers. I felt much less leaky and worried about leaking while we had visitors in the hospital. It totally rocked.
....that someone has tried to give you since you announced your pregnancy?
I just had a coworker offer me her breast pump... um no. for some reason this feases me out.
There are certain things I'd rather buy new!!
My mom got me a breast pump. Used. From a garage sale. Seriously mom? I took it because I didn't want to hurt her feelings, but what was she thinking?!

Exactly what I was thinking. Take them!! It's not like they're used :-)
I have leftover from DD and will be using them. When I'm done with kids, if one of my SILs is pregnant I would offer the leftovers to her. Where I live they only come in huge packs, so I had to get lots more than I needed.
BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP

My SIL had offered me her pump, but in my BF class, they had said not to use it even with new parts - since you can't "clean" the motor and it might be unsanitary?? Not sure about that, but I did buy a new, expensive one from Medela(saved gift cards and money for it) and thought it was a great purchase.
Grossest thing for me was not for pregnancy. My Aunt in New Jersey, who is VERY sweet, sent me the potty that she used for her grandsons when they were potty training. She is usually a neat freak, but no lie - there was poop all over the underneath of the seat. It promptly went into the trash.
I used a hand me down Medela from my SIL...but I felt more comfortable b/c she is family and a total clean freak. I never would have been able to afford one as nice if I bought it new.
My other SIL has 4 girls and has been passing down clothes to DD since she was born. I am SOOO grateful b/c I use a LOT of the clothes. However, I don't think she sorts through anything. I usually end up donating over half the bag b/c the clothes have stains all over them (like even poop stains that she tried to get out, or big blank ink stains). That's not really gross, and I am still super grateful for the cloths b/c I would be spending SOOO much money that we don't have if she hadn't given DD so much!
Nothin' yet this go around. The same SIL has handed down some maternity clothes to me that were totally not my style...but I got a few good pieces out of the bag too so I was still happy :-).

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34

Barf!
My pump had no tubes and I'm not sure how the motor can get dirty, but maybe you're right on that.

sorry, FTM but, ummm...do you really leak that much post birth? omg...now I'm a little scared! (haha, as if I wasn't already scared)

Haha. The amount of blood that came out of me (can't speak for all) the days post birth was pretty astonishing. That plus the tailbone pain I had (luckily I had no tearing though and a fairly "easy" vaginal birth) I wanted the extra space to tuck the ice packs in. So it wasn't ALL about the blood, but yeah, I am used to heavy periods and this was heavier than any period I'd had before for the first couple days--but then I had very light bleeding for about four or five more weeks. It's not terrible, but yes, it can sound a little scary. That wasn't my intention though!
My SIL offered me her leftover giant pads she got from the hospital after her birth last year. Why she still had these and thought I would want them, I have no clue.
I would actually take these. My sister had a baby last year and the hospital only gave her a couple of pads. I spent hours running to every pharmacy in her neighborhood for her and couldn't find any. Having a couple extra on hand for free would be great.

haha. Yes, yes do you. It's called lochia (wikipedia has a nice yummy description if you're interested in more details). I had a c/s, after which there is usually less bleeding than after a vaginal birth (because they scrape the uterine lining while they're in there), and it was still a lot of blood. For the first few hours, they were changing those big 'ole pads every 30 min or so. I only needed the mega pads for about a week, then I switched to regular pads. I bled for about 5 weeks PP, but about 2 weeks of that at the end was just never-ending spotting.
It kind of felt like all those periods you got to skip while you were pregnant just sort of built up and came all at once PP. :-) Fun times.
I'm not trying to freak you out, I'm just saying that you really should have some big pads on hand for PP (since you're not allowed to use tampons).

For 3 days, everytime I would sit up, I could feel blood gushing. It was so gross!
My best friend gave me her Medela portable breast pump and I bought all new parts. There was no way for the motor to get anything on it so I wouldn't worry about it. Also, my old company had built-in pumps in the lactation rooms so all you would need is your own parts. They're so expensive I would definitely recommend taking it!
My SIL gave me her breast pump. She hardly used it and it's a $350 pump. I didn't know that was weird. I absolutely plan on using it. No one else has given me anything.
sorry, FTM but, ummm...do you really leak that much post birth? omg...now I'm a little scared! (haha, as if I wasn't already scared)
Like others have said, it really does just depend on the person but the first few days there is usually a LOT. When I was in the hospital, every time I stood up it felt like my water breaking all over again. That only lasted about 2 days and after another 3 or 4 days of fairly heavy discharge, it turned light and was gone in another two weeks.
My SIL offered me her leftover giant pads she got from the hospital after her birth last year. Why she still had these and thought I would want them, I have no clue.

same here, would use those and will use my leftover ones! I had also borrowed a friends breast pump. Those things can be sterilized, you know.
Used breast pumps and leftover pads are amusing offers, I will admit. However...
I don't see the difference between using a hand-me-down breast pump and renting one from the hospital. As long as you buy new parts, I think it's generally considered to be fine.
Hospital-grade pumps run on a closed system. Milk particles won't enter the motor. Therefore, it is safe to say that someone else's milk particles won't get "recycled" out of the motor and end up coming out of the tube and being added to the milk you are pumping.
Other machines that aren't hospital grade work on an open system. The milk particles do reach the inner membrane and motor, which you cannot reach, to clean and sterilize. This means that every time you pump, your milk mingles with the old milk particles that were there before. This can not only transmit certain viruses, but can also just be unsanitary, especially if there were issues with cracked or bleeding nipples with the previous user. So, I think it's nasty to use a hand-me-down.
