oversupply what to do?

Hey ladies. I think that I have come to terms with the fact that I have an oversupply. I had to pump within the first week that DS was born bc he took a chunk out of one of my nipples and the other one was severely cracked.

He is now 2 weeks old and I am getting around 5-6 oz every 3 hours when I do pump. I had a breast augmentation a little over a year ago and was worried that I wouldn't be able to nurse him. It hurts so bad to be engorged and I noticed that my let down is extremely painful, which I guess could be a result of surgery?

Anyway, how do I go about decreasing my supply without exploding? DS can only finish about half of a boob before he passes out. Also his poop is very acidic smelling and is kind of brownish, I thought that I ate something that upset his stomach but now I have started to realize it could be the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance...

Please help! thanks

Oh and we also both have thrush... so that's just great

Re: oversupply what to do?

  • you can block feed, offer the same side for the next feeding to make sure he empties the breast. kellymom explains it well.

  • I'm having a similar issue. My right breast seems to be producing much more than my left. She seems very gassy after eating and has short feedings of about 8-10 minutes sometimes less.

I hand expressed 2 oz from my right breast this morning then fed her, that seemed to help. It just comes so quick that she almost chokes and has difficulty keeping up with it. I'm also having the same thing with the poos.

Any advice would be great, I feel so bad when shes hungry and its just too much all at once.

  • I just found out this is my issue as well. Kellymom is a great help, too. Just google oversupply of breast milk and you're set, it can explain things way better than I can.

  • I am working through this very thing right now! There are two ways to deal with it. You can block feed which is allowing LO to feed from one side for a few sessions. This allows them to get to the hind milk. The other side will become engorged, so pump or self express just enough to take the edge off.

The other option is to decrease your pumping sessions little by little. This is what I am doing. I was pumping 15 minutes after each session. I decreased this by two minutes every day for a couple of days, and eliminated two of my pumping sessions. Once I got down to 10 minutes I decrease it by 1 minute every day until I can eventually eliminate pumping. Keep feeding LO on demand and they will regulate your supply to what it should be. In the meantime, you will have a nice freezer stash for a rainy day!!

     Good luck!!
