Re: CP: TV time

  • So just recently I have started allowing Avery to watch a few episodes of Jake and the Neverland Pirates. She LOVES it. She calls it "GO". And every time we ask if she wants to watch it, she gets all excited. I know the recommendation is 2 years.

We do a lot of play time with no tv at all.

  • If it weren't for Disney Junior, I might not ever be able to get ready for work.  DH and Stella will watch Jake & the Neverland Pirates on a regular basis - and DH makes a bit production out of singing the pirate song with Stella.

My oldest DD and I do this with Avery. Embarrassed

  • I voted never, but that's really not that accurate.  She gets glances here and there.  And I know my mom let her watch TV the other day when she was not feeling well.  At home, we do not let her sit for any length of time and watch TV.  Even if it does absolutely no harm at this point, I just don't see how it can do any good either.

When she's 2, we will relax a lot more on the subject.  However, that doesn't mean the TV will be on kid's programming all day every day.  We will still limit it.

We almost always watch it with her. Not that, that makes a difference. But I don't allow it to be watched all day. We will do one or two episodes (whatever OnDemand has) and then the TV goes off. Avery never really "sits" and watches it. She only ever pays attention to the music parts of it. She dances and then goes back to playing.

  • I voted never, but that's not 100% accurate, either. Our TV is on almost every evening, but DD doesn't pay much attention to it. I've never purposely turned on a kid's show for her to watch. I don't even think that she would notice it if I did.

ETA: I purposely turn the TV off during the times I'm home with her alone. But DH and I have different philosophies on DD and TV. So when he's home it's usually on with shows he wants to watch.

  • I sometimes turn on a music DVD that has animation (They Might Be Giants' "Here Comes Science" - awesome.) He likes the music and will look at the screen for maybe a minute at a time, but he doesn't seem that interested. We also turn on the news most mornings and he really isn't interested at that at all, except occasionally the weather (he liked that even before they started saying his name all the time).

  • We do tv if I absolutely have to get something done and I cannot wear her nor put her down to play. Such as making dinner. Sometimes I can get her to play in her playroom but other times no way and then I roll out the Nick Jr.

Fwiw I do not watch tv either when she is up. I am one that does not see the difference between it being on and not allowing tv time. It makes no sense to me. If its on, it's on.

  • None. We just don't turn it on if she's in the room, she turns into a zombie if we do. I'd rather she be using those minutes to learn.

  • I voted "sometime every day", but it's not really accurate.  We usually have the tv on all the time when we're home, but DD rarely watches it.  I try turning it on NickJr. in the morning while I'm getting ready but she'll only sit there for a minute or two and then she'll come and find me.  She doesn't really seem to care and I'm fine with that.

  • TV?  No - we don't own a TV.  But we will occasionally play an episode of Pocoyo for him or, if he's sitting on MH's lap at his computer, he'll get to watch some You Tube stuff.

  • I marked SS. I don't keep the TV off if she's in the room or try to keep her away from the TV.  She just has no interest in it all. With older kids their is a variety of different shows on and none get her attention.

  • DS loves bubble guppies and yo gabba gabba so a few times a week I'll put on a couple episodes before dinner time. Usually by then I'm totally spent entertaining him and need a sanity break.  Thats also the time I'm making dinner.  The rest of the day I rarely have the tv on.  I'm not super strict about the tv, but I dont keep it on for background noise either.

DH and I have different philosophies on DD and TV. So when he's home it's usually on with shows he wants to watch.

DH is less strict about it than I am as well.  However, I have a very strict rule about what he can watch while she's in the room.  That means zero action movies, anything with any killing or any images she might see that could not be good for her little eyes.

I am prone to terrible dreams/night mares from images I've seen.  It was really bad when I was little.  I do not watch scary movies at all.  Not even the previews.  I already know she is a dreamer.  Sometimes, she will be crying in her sleep.  Not awake until I pick her up to comfort her.  :(.   I want to guard what her mind sees as much as possible.

This is us pretty much exactly.  I do SAH with her though, and I will admit and every now and then if I am having a bad day I'll turn on 15 min of Ellen or Friends or something while I stuff diapers and she plays nearby.  Other than that, it is off.

  • DS gets his episode of Curious George and typically we watch the good night show on sprout for the bernstein bears......therefore DD sees it too. Sometimes Super Whyy as well for DS. Now and then we'll put on Sesame street for Elmo's world but that is pretty rare. Otherwise, we don't have the TV on during the day.

Does it impact DD? Well, she adores George and the books now and steals DS's george stuffed animal so I guess she connects it all. Otherwise, she'll sit with DS and I to do the "sprout stretch" during the g-night show (they do a yoga pose for kids)...she stretches her arms in the air. So cute. Otherwise, she is off playing unless there is music for dancing. It's not so bad.

  • When we wake up I turn on Disney Junior for Clara to watch while I make coffee and breakfast. It takes her a little while to wake up, so she just stares at it like a zombie for like 5-10 minutes, and then I go turn it off. Also, sometimes when I shower I put her in her playpen and turn on cartoons. It works sometimes to keep her happy long enough. Those are the only times she watches TV though.

  • I voted never, but that's because he won't watch it.  Stick out tongue  I had purposely kept it from him up until recently, then he was really sick a few weeks ago & I thought I'd be nice and let him watch some Elmo...he had no desire to sit there and watch.  I tried again during our 7 hour drive to the beach when we were about 45 minutes away and he was starting to lose it...nothing.  He couldn't have cared less!

My older son will watch his shows in the morning while my husband gets ready for work, so Liam is sometimes in the room, but again, pays no attention to the TV.  (even though, I admit: I wish he would sometimes so that I could have those 20 minutes uninterrupted!!  It's amazing how much more you can get done when there's not someone getting into everything)

  • I voted SS, only because our tv is usually on, but she never actually watches it. The only thing that will catch her attention is the opening song to Chuggington and to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. She's never actually sat and watched an episode though.

  • I voted "some everyday".  The older kids get to watch two 30 min shows a day (one generally when the au pair is prepping lunch and the other in the afternoon.  That being said sometimes LO is upstairs or napping when the show is on.  He doesn't get shows specifically for him, he just happens to be there when the TV is on.  I do notice that he will sit and watch when Go Diego Go and Little Einsteins is on, and he doesn't really pay attention to Sid the Science Kid, or some other shows that are played.

  • She doesn't watch any TV. We still own a very old TV, but we cancelled cable earlier this year (wasn't any point in paying for something we weren't using) and we don't watch shows on the internet, either. I keep the old TV and a DVD player around because I occasionally like to rent a movie and will watch it after she's gone to bed for the night.

  • I have the tv most days for background noise and what not but O doesn't really sit and watch. She like the songs that play on Strawberry Shortcake so we have some of those on the dvr but if they are not singing she is just going about her day playing with her toys and trying to climb on everything

  • I have very little help. It's allllllll me 5 days a week. dH gets home after she's sleeping and Momma needs some time. So yeah, she does get some.  Limit it to an hour a day.

As far as using the minutes to learn, I can only stretch so far and she can't "learn" every waking minute. Even babies tire of independent play or being taught constantly. I know after a while my DD starts to ignore me like "mama quit bugging me" lol

  • A few times a month I will turn on something for him specifally, but on a daily basis he doesn't really pay any attention to the TV unless he picks up the remote and starts mashing buttons
  • A lot of these responses are kinda making me feel bad...but at the same time, I don't get the 'zombie' reaction from Stella when she is watching tv.  She gets into it, of course, but she will wave at Mickey, clap along, she is starting 'dancing' and will point and sometimes 'talk' to them.  And even still...she will only watch so long before she's wonder where the hell Mommy is!

Avery doesn't "Zombie" out either. It's no big deal. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Connor gets a little bit everyday. In the mornings I put on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse while I try to get ready for work. He only really pays attention when the opening song is on or the hot dog song. Other than that he's found me in the bathroom and of course that is way more entertaining then Mickey. If we're home on a Sunday and there's a baseball game on we will put it on and will do the same for football in the coming weeks. Every once in a while he'll stop playing if mommy or daddy yell at the TV but he really could care less.

And this is why both DH and I really need to limit our sports watching with Stella around!  We yell...and let the expletives fly!

  • Sprout is usually on most mornings at our house. I cannot handle not having noise in the house when I am alone so I usually keep the TV on even though I am not watching. She doesn't really watch it either. She stops and dances when she hears a song she likes and then goes back to playing.

Yeah that is definitely a problem in our house as well. I have using the word "fudge" a whole lot. There is no way we could limit sports in our house and that's fine but we both need to curb the swearing.

My response really wasn't made to make anyone else feel bad. WE don't let her watch it, because she does turn into a zombie. I can see the wheels stop turning as soon as she zones in on the screen. So we just leave it off. No big deal :) We are definitely in the minority among our friends, I hardly know anyone IRL that doesn't let their toddler watch some TV.

  • Mickey Mouse is the shiit in my house.
  • Ds watches signing time every morning. He has learned signs from that show that I never taught him and then uses them later. I have zero guilt about this. It lets me get s shower and my son has an unreal vocab for an al ost 14 month old, occasionally he will watch Mickey mouse while I make dinner.

  • I said no, but we do have some favorite Sesame street youtube videos that she watches almost every day.  Probably for less than 10 minutes total though.  This is mostly because we don't get many channels on TV- in fact, I don't even know what channel PBS is on, and we don't get Nickelodeon or anything like that.

^^ This ^^ When she's older we will start doing "saturday morning cartoons" like our family used to all together. It was such a great time to spend the morning making forts, eating food in the living room, and watching the cartoons that I have decided that we will do the same with our kids. As for during the week she won't be watching really any t.v. If I have something on and she gets interested in it for some reason I just turn it off. All "my shows" I can watch online after she is in bed if I miss them.

  • I try to limit it, but there are times I will purposely put pocoyo or similar on for him. Usually when he's in a clingy mood and I need to ready for work. He is sick right now and needs a nebulizer, and I've been putting it on for those treatments.

My understanding about the negative TV studies was that those kids spent something like 1/3 of their waking hours watching tv...that is A LOT. IMO a little in moderation is okay. As long as there is a good balance between TV and playing inside and outside I'm happy.

This is me exactly. DD gets maybe an hour a day as well, but to be honest even then she's constantly running back and forth, playing with toys and asking me to read her books. The TV gives me those few precious minutes to myself that I really need. I don't see anything wrong with it.
