Midwife and CVS/Amnio?

I don't have my first appointment with my midwife for another two weeks so I was hoping one of you ladies might know the answer to this: Will a midwife do a CVS or amnio?

I have a genetic disorder called retinitis pigmentosa. It causes blindness (primarily in men). While I carry the disordeer, I am not affected by it and it won't cause any problems with my pregnancy. That said, I would like to know as soon as possible if I'm having a son that has it so that I can begin finding a retina specialist.

  • I don't think it's within the scope of practice for a midwife, likely they will refer you to an OB.

  • Midwifery is different in every state, but I think that's outside the scope everywhere.  So, she'll have to refer you.

  • Thanks, ladies! This is my first so there's still a learning curve at only 6 weeks.
  • You'll definitely be referred, most likely to a maternalfetal medicine specialist.

  • Try not to worry  :)  I know it's hard and I'm so glad you're getting your ducks in a row, but for now just focus on staying healthy and growing that sweet baby of yours!  Due to family history, we had genetic counseling (but didn't need the amnio) and still got to see & deliver with a midwife.

I'm sure everything will work out just fine.  Best of luck :)

  • Thanks ladies! My biological father is blind (lost his vision slowly but was legally blind at 18) and because he and the family were in denial, he didn't really start dealing with it til he was in his mid 20s. He's doing wonderfully now and is an advocate for disability rights but it was a hard adjustment for him. If I can save my baby any of that stress, I would like to. But you are right, breathlessbride, I need to try not to stress about it. The stress is no good for anyone.
  • My first midwife was part of a larger practice that did offer amnio and cvs (I declined, so I'm not sure what happens after the point of requesting one).  If your midwife isn't in the position to offer one "in house" I'm sure she can refer you.
