Human Growth Hormone as part of IVF protocol?

My RE is recommending that we use human growth hormone (hgh)(brand name Saizen) on our next IVF cycle.

I've done some reseach and it seems like primarily this is used in women over 40 to help with egg quality-I'm 31.

Also, this is going to add around $1500 on to our meds....thoughts? I know I need to do some more research but I thought I would ask here first.

Has anyone else used this?

Re: Human Growth Hormone as part of IVF protocol?

  • ** Ticker Warning**

When I went for a 2nd opinion to a clinic with higher success rates than my first, my new RE recommended this for me for IVF #2 (I was 34 at the time.) He said they had seen an increase in quality and therefore, more success. I didn't up going into IVF #2, so not sure what it would have done for me, but I do know that he was able to show me data showing an increase in success with cycles that used Saizen. GL with whatever you decide!!!!

  • I haven't used it before, but after our really poor embryos in our last cycle, I'm going to ask my RE about this on Wednesday at our WTF.  I know that AmCheri used it during her cycle and felt she had good results with it.  Sorry I can't be more help, but I'll come back and let you know what my RE says about it!  Good luck!

  • I know my clinic (CCRM) uses Saizen in some cases, and from the blogs I've read, definitely not always in women over 40.  I have my beta tomorrow and if it is negative, I am going to request that we use Saizen in my second cycle.  From what I understand, it can help quality, but not quantity.

  • I used low dose HCG injections during my IVF 3 and 4.. I got MANY more eggs those 2 cycles than the first 2... We haven't had a successful BFP yet so I am not sure about the quality but we did have more successful retrievals.. Good luck!! ( I was 27 at the time BTW.. definitely not just for the over 40 crowd :-)
  • I used a low dose HCG for both my IVF's. (I'm 29) I'm not sure if there was a reason they put me on it or if it's just standard in their practice since I was given instruction for it both times. (Only one of the 2 IVF's made it to ER and ET though). I also am not sure if my lower AMH has anything to do with their decision either. (I'm not sure if I was helpful, but I did use it and I'm not ovre 40 either)

    Good Luck.

  • I used it and I'm 28.  My RE was pretty happy with the amount of eggs we retrieved...17, 11 mature.  I am switching RE offices because our old RE was a jerk, but I hope my new RE is willing to use it for IVF #2.
