Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Down to 1 nap already?

For the past few days, the LO has been really mad when I put her down for her morning nap.  She has been on the 2, 3, 4 nap schedule and it was golden but now she will play in her crib for 45 minutes without falling asleep until I just go and get her.  When she did take a nap yesterday it was from 12:15 until 3:30 when I woke her up because we needed to leave.  I feel like it is too early for just one nap?  Since she doesn't get fussy without it, should I just go with it?   She does do the occasional yawn or eye rub.  She will be 10 months this week.

  • Every baby is different.

I would try to extend tat first stretch of awake time to 3h first to see if that helps. We pretty much do a 3-3-4 or a 3-3-5 now. That past stretch depends on the length of the last nap.

  • Thanks!  I think I will try the 3 hour stretch.  I gave her a bath this time after she didn't go down at first and now she is asleep ;)  It was right around 3 hours since she woke up.
  • I agree with PPs that it is maybe not enough activity before her am nap -- especially if she's playing during that time.  My DD is probably on the high end for amount of time between naps but she wakes at 6am and has her first nap at 9am or 9:30 (any earlier and she isn't tired enough).  Then she does 3.5hrs before her pm nap and about 4 till bedtime (give or take).

I am hoping to hang on to two naps another few months.  I have read average age is 15 months though some do earlier and some later.

  • Our 10 month olds take just one nap at day care (afternoon) -- there is so much going on, they hate to nap there.  But at home on the weekends, they still take two good naps usually.  One kid will sometimes fight the second nap (I let him cry for 10-15 minutes, after that if it's turned to screaming, I give up), but then he is cranky and ready for dinner and bed early.  If they take two good naps sometimes we can keep them up later and do fun things out of the house on weekends.

It just depends on the kid!  Crankiness and eye rubbing are a great sign that they are not getting enough sleep, IMO.
