AAP updates position on circumcision

Not trying to start a debate, just sharing info. This is and always will be a personal parenting choice. Sorry the link isn't clicky - I'm on my iPad.

  • Well, DS is circumcised, and we don't have this decision this time, so good to know!

    C&P from the article:

The academy, the leading U.S. pediatric group, now says the health benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks and that families who choose to circumcise their baby boys should be able to.

    A summary:

The AAP updated the position that was last updated in 1999.

They aren't recommending the procedure for all male newborns, but they are saying that the medical benefits outweigh the risks (health-wise) and the benefits justify insurance covering circumcision.

  • The article is still so up in the air to me.  I mean they obviously are saying there are some medical reasons but still not enough to really say you should do this for sure.  We are not circumcising our DS.  If I heard a compelling reason then we might reconsider but everything I have read just makes it sound like there are some slight benefits, maybe but then I have also known two people who have had issues with the procedure itself.  We figure if our son has issues with UTIs or other problems we could always do it later but I'm just no 100% comfortable with taking something that he naturally has and altering it from day one.  My DH is actually circumcised but he doesn't want to do it for the baby.  In the end I guess it's whatever you're comfortable with overall.

  • After reading the article, it sounds like they didn't really "change" their stance. Instead they just blurred the lines a bit more.

"do it if you want, shouldn't be routine for everyone, but it's not horrible, and insurance should cover it"

    Teeheehee.

Also, I had an MFM appointment with a Dr. McWeeney. It's been six months and I still giggle at that. (He was very pleasant, but his name is so unfortunate).

  • This is a difficult decision for sure.  We really struggled with it.  I agree with you that its a personal parenting choice.  I think the AAP was just trying to give support to it so that it can be covered by insurance.
  • Thanks for the clicky, Steph. We did it for ds and it wasn't bad. It was a religious/match dh thing. I'm just occasionally worried that he'll be upset about it later. Oy. Parenting comes with such guilt.

That pretty much sums it up. Just seems like a way to ensure that insurance and Medicaid will cover the procedure.
