Special Needs

Who's interested in a balance Check-in?

It can be hard to find time for yourself and your marriage when you have a child with special needs.  I know a couple weeks ago our board was swamped with questions like, "What do you do to keep your sanity?"  So, I've been thinking, what do you all think about doing a balance check-in every monday?

We could state the things we did for ourselves (or our marriage) in the previous week.  And, I could suggest a self-care task for the week, like "This week, find 1/2 hour to take a relaxing bath."  Is anyone interested?

Re: Who's interested in a balance Check-in?

  • Sounds good to me. I find it hard to balance things in my life and sometimes I find myself sticking my head in the sand. Im in.

  • Sounds like a great thread to remind ourselves to maintain sanity. I am really not sure what I do to keep myself sane. Along with DS, I feel my DH is on the spectrum as well (though DH doesn't agree to it), so it is kind of hard to find time for myself between the DH and DS. I like tennis and am a big fan of Roger federer, so I take time out to watch his matches on tv, read a lot about him, his game techniques, etc. I usually go watch the US open tennis at NYC every year. Cannot wait to do so on the long weekend!

  • I think it sounds like a great idea!

  • This would be good for us to remember to do one simple thing for each week.

In my case, mines are kind of lame like taking two naps on the weekend for Saturday and Sunday or buying myself ice cream.

  • I think it's a fantastic idea.  DH has become very good at finding time for himself - he was awful at it before but ever since the dx, I think he's done it to keep from getting too angsty.  Me, on the other hand, have never been good at it so I think this balance check-in will be great for me.

I feel like I must have some sort of social anxiety issues because I always feel like "oh poor me, I have no friends" but as DH points out, I make no effort to make friends either or make up a million +1 excuses not to do things with others when the opportunity arises.   I just always say I'm painfully shy but I'm not so sure anymore. Anyway, recently I asked DH to institute 'date night'.  One night a month, where we go out on a date.  And to make it fun, we're going to pick out different restaurants to go to - things we haven't tried before.  Last month was a tapas place.  Not sure what we're doing in September yet.

Malcivar, we do this too!  We've found some great restaurants this way.  Also, I tend to be very boring and predictable when it comes to my food choices (I get the same thing every time I go to a certain restaurant), so this allows me to be adventurous.  I try something different each time we go out, and if I don't like it, then its okay because I know it is a one-time event.
