Each state is different in the way they do certain things, but in NJ, and I believe anywhere in general, the very first thing you should is establish a child support order. Its probably the easiest thing to deal with, at least in my case.
When it comes to custody/visitation, a lot of it depends on what you two agree on. If you agree, or can come to an agreement either on your own or in mediation, the judge will sign an order saying you have something in place. If you can't agree, the judge will make up a schedule. I personally believe its better if you can come up with your own schedule.
If you have a lawyer or free legal services, I highly recommend talking to them, they can be very helpful.
Hope all works out for you!
