Cloth diapers?

I'm considering using cloth diapers, but mainly while home with baby. Is it okay to switch between cloth ones and disposable ones, or will it confuse the baby?

Re: Cloth diapers?

  • I didn't have any problems with my daughter 15 yrs ago when I was swapping between the two. I'm expecting to do the same this time around.

  • I'm not really sure how it could confuse the baby. It is not like bottles causing nipple confusion with some infants learning to latch properly. A diaper, whether cloth or disposable is really just a place to catch excrement since a baby can't (or doesn't) control excreting their bodily waste. They don't have to "learn" to use a cloth diaper any differently than a disposable diaper.

FWIW, my best friend cloth diapers her daughter during nights, weekends, and over the summer when she is home with her. Her LO uses disposable diapers while she's at work because her daycare provider is uncomfortable using cloth. It works great for them and her LO doesn't really notice a difference.

  • We clothed most of the time- except when out and about for long periods or out of town. No problems for DS! The cloth diaper board was also great for information!

  • You can cloth as little or as much as you want, it doesn't effect baby unless they are sensitive to a diaper.

  • At first I was afraid to cloth diaper when we were out and about. It becomes a normal part of your routine, though and you dont even think about it after a while. Plus, there are less blow outs in cloth!

  • I plan on doing cloth too, but was worried that when we go around to gram &gramps, shopping, etc. that it would be a major pain to do cloth - some people just do disposable when they are on the go and that shouldn't be a problem unless LO has sensitivity to them... but I've also heard that once you get into the swing of things, cloth diapering isn't as burdensome as you think it might be... especially if you have a good wet-bag...

  • I have a couple of friends who CD, but their daycares will only use disposable.  They just CD nights and weekends, no problem.

  • I think if you only used cloth and then suddenly tired sposies on an older baby, it might confuse some, but probably not most.  The different texture of the papery diaper compared to the softness of the cloth could totally be a turn off for one never sposied before.  But if you're planning on going both from the start, you most likely won't have an issue.  I think it's smart of you to ask this though, people don't give babies enough credit.
