Okay ladies...I'm going back to work tomorrow fighting back tears as I type and I will be pumping. I'm a teacher and I will have to feed DS about 5:30 each morning. He currently eats about every 3 to 4 hours during the day. My plan is to pump after I feed him in the morning before we leave, and then I was hoping to make it to my lunch at 11:10, and then pump again at about 2:10. I'll pick him up about 4, and will breastfeed him between 4 and 5. Do you think that will work, or will going 5 hours in the morning end up messing me up? I'm hoping some of you ladies who have been doing this awhile can help me out! Thank you!
Re: EP/Pumping at Work Question
That is very close to what I do..l am also a teacher. I wish you lots of luck and a smooth transition. My transition has been awful, and pumping at school has been quite a challenge since my only break is at 11:30. I've resorted to locking my classroom door, covering my window, and pumping in there since there really isn't another place I can go to consistetly. I am trying to wean myself off pumping since it's been such struggle for me...I plan on nursing in the am and in the afternoons/evenings.
That schedule should be fine. There are lots of days when I feed DD at 6:00am and don't get to pump until 11 or 12 and then I pump again between 2 and 3:30 and feed her around 5:30.
On a great day I feed her and pump after and then pump at 10:30a and 2:30p. Now that she takes 15oz at daycare I add a pumping session at night because I don't always get enough milk during the day or if I skipped my early morning session. It's incredible the way your body adjusts; I have actually had a day or two when I only pumped in the early morning and once around 12pm and fed DD around 5pm and I didn't have any drop in production.
My only advice would be to drink plenty of water, but because our bodies are pretty regulated after 6 months of feeding it's harder to affect your supply drastically with a missed feeding or two. GL with returning to work!
