Buying a new stroller at 10 months..advice needed please

While I was still pregnant with the boys, I bought a a Graco DuoGlider off of Craigs List for $50, it was great while the boys were still in their infant car seats. It is now starting to fall apart, screws are coming out, the front canopy is bent and screwed up, etc.

I was looking into getting a BJCM since I spent so little on the first stroller, but is it worth spending the money on a nice stroller since the boys are so close to walking? I'm worried that I'll get it and then they will have no interest in being pushed around anymore. We are going to North Carolina for vacation in October and to Sea World in December, and I think it would be nice to have a SBS so that they both can see out and not have to worry about the baby in back kicking the baby in front all day.

If not a BJCM, are there any other stroller you would recommend?

  • We have 2 strollers- a maclaren SBS that is our mall/errand stroller and lives in the trunk of the car. Then we also have a Schwinn jogging stroller that is too bulky for quick trips, but does fit in our Accord's trunk and I take if we're going to be gone for a long time or if I know I'll be on uneven surfaces. I haven't found a need for a tandem, and my 2 SBS's have gotten me through 2.5 years with the girls.

At 2.5, there are still times I need a stroller for containment, especially when I'm out with them by myself. While they don't always like it, usually they understand why they're in the stroller and that I try to keep it as quick as possible. We're more likely to let them walk when we have 1:1 coverage, but keep in mind they'll tire eventually on big trips like Seaworld.

  • Absolutely! Most of my MoM friends used a stroller quite a bit till their twins were 2; we used it till 2.5. I think you tend to use one longer with multiples since "crowd control" is more of an issue; 18 to 24-month-olds tend to try to dash off quite a bit so having them buckled into a stroller when you're running errands, etc., can make life a lot easier. (Of course there are exceptions to everything, e.g. some LOs resist the stroller from a younger age.) And for places like the zoo, theme parks, etc., you're likely to use a stroller till at least 3.

We had a BJCM, a DSNG and a DuoGlider (the last was loaned from a friend). LOVED our City Mini! Great stroller and we got a ton of use. We got it when the boys were 4m and started using it more at 6m. I'd say it is definitely worth the money, but you could also consider the City Micro if you'd rather spend less. They're quite similar other than the full recline and bigger sunshades on the Mini.

  • My kids will be 2 soon and I still use my City Mini double a lot - basically everywhere that doesn't have a double shopping cart. There's no way my kids could be trusted uncontained in a store or crowd.
  • I cannot give any advice on that particular stroller, but I can say, yes you will use a stroller for a while. My girls didn't want to be in a stroller anymore at 20 months old, so I sold my Graco Duoglider and it was fine. Until they got to be about 26 months old and I needed to go shopping for the holidays. They would run around the store like crazy children, I just couldn't take it. I had to buy a stroller again that I could strap them into so they couldn't run off on me and I could contain them. I ended up buying a double umbrella at that point because I wanted something lightweight that I could keep in the back of my Pilot when I needed to pull it out. Also I wanted something I could easily use at the airport since we were flying that spring. It worked out great, I still have the stroller and pull it out when we went to Disney last year several times. They haven't been in it now in over 6 months, so I think it is going to the yardsale in late October. But they are now 4 so I feel like I got my money out of that stroller.

So I really feel you will need a stroller for a while. They may get to a time that they don't want to be in the stroller and want to walk, which is great until they novelty wears off and then they want to bolt on you in a parking lot. But I also think my girls didn't want in the stroller anymore at 20 months because they were always fighting since it was a front to back and the front kid was always getting kicked or her hair pulled. The double umbrella stroller was a side by side and they never gave me a problem riding in it.

  • I have a city mini and love it.  Mine are 2 and we still use it often.

I would definitely get it!  But, this is coming from someone who got one when my girls were over 2 and I love that stroller!  I've had a bunch of strollers and the BJCM was definitely my favorite.  We regularly used a stroller until they over 2.5.  There are probably times now that they would still like to use a stroller, but we haven't used one since they were almost 3.  I'm often out with DDs by myself and it took a while until I could trust them to walk with me and hold hands.  Not to mention they didn't have the stamina to do long walks at the zoo.

  • We had the Graco DuoGlider and I agree it was great while they were in the infant car seats. We purchased the Combi Sport Twin Stroller and it is amazing the boys love it and it really does fit through all doorways. It is $225 compared to $400 for the City Mini.

  • I bought my 3rd stroller (4th if you count the DSNG) when mine were around 10 months old. It was a Combi at my MoM sale, because I had a tandem (BJCS) and an all-terrain (BJ City Series) and wanted a lightweight, quick fold stroller. If you're out and about on a daily basis, a good stroller is important. I would have gotten a BJCM as my SBS stroller but for the fact I had the other two and I wanted something cheap. I don't love the Combi; it's good enough but the quality is kind of flimsy compared to Baby Jogger.
