Breastfeeding

Does this mean my supply is low?

LO is nursing longer and longer, but is still hungry after. Not just a little bit hungry, either: she cries with exactly the same intensity as before her feed, then guzzles down around 1-2oz formula. She was a big girl to begin with (9lbs 9oz at birth, 10lbs 4oz at her last weigh-in) and I know that she's only getting bigger, but it just doesn't feel right that she would still be so hungry after nursing for 45 minutes, or even an hour?

It means she is going through a growth spurt.

That was my first thought, but this has been going on for a week or so now. Can they last that long? I don't actually breastfeed her much at all any more, although I am pumping. It seems like every time I breastfeed her it now takes forever and she's still hungry afterwards.

There's basically a 3-4 day growth spurt at 2/3 weeks, 4/5 weeks, 6/7 weeks etc... so yes, it can last "that long."  If she's not on the breast I'm not sure how to suggest pumping through a growth spurt but in general the frequency of nursing is what queues the body to meet the growing demand.

  • The only thing that ever increased my supply is herbs. You have to use them often and daily. You will want to use at least two herbs because they work better that way. I'm using Breastea from breastea.com and it has worked really great for me. You just drink it daily and my milk supply has increased. You might want to try it out and see if that helps.
