Talk to me about heating baby food

Last week I made a batch of carrots for Hank and froze them until this weekend when he turned 6 months.

I have read that microwaving the food in a glass container is an option for reheating the food . . . But I have always believed that nutrients are lost when microwaved, so I am not sure I am too fond of this method.

How do you heat homemade baby food once it has been thawed?

  • Could you put the container in hot/warm water?
    Pass the sheet cake.

This is what we do.  I have little glass jars that I just pop into a bowl of hot/warm water to warm the food.  You could also heat in a small pan on the stove.  I try and stay away from the microwave if I can.

  • I think if you're microwaving the shiiit out of the food, yeah, you'll lose nutrients - but it's baby food so you don't 'want it hot hot.  I nuke LO's food in a little dish that's just from the dishes we use (porcelin or corel or whatever) for 8 or 9 seconds, just to take the cool out of it.

    This.

My DH likes to 'steam' veggies by putting them in the microwave in water for a while. I'm sure that takes all the nutrients out of them.

Microwaving LO's food for 10 seconds so its not too cold. Probably not. Their main nutrients are from formula or breastmilk at this stage anyways.

I usually put DD's food in the fridge a day or two before so it can thaw. Sometimes I microwave it for a few seconds and other times I leave it out on the counter to 'warm up' a little while before I feed her. It all depends on what we are doing that day and if I'm near the fridge.

  • If I'm on my game, I will put the frozen pur?e cube in the fridge to defrost overnight. 10 to 15 minutes before meal time, I will take it out and leave it on the counter to warm to room temperature.  If I don't remember, I put it in the microwave for 10 secs.  If I forget to defrost a cube, I usually use warm water to melt it.

  • It heats pretty fast. I usually just nuke it 8-10 seconds. Don't think that'll kill it.
  • I nuke sometimes, but only for a couple of seconds.

This is what we do. DS rarely if ever gets warm food. It's either cold or room temperature. He's drank cold formula since he was about a month old so he's used to it.
