am i right about these pumped milk mixing rules?

I can mix milk from different pumping sessions all day as long as they have all been in the fridge and same temp right?

My question is, what about thawed milk? Can I mix milk that is thawed from the freezer from different days?

If she doesn't eat a whole bottle in one setting, do I put it back inthe fridge for her next feeding if its going to be a few hours? Can i heat it again or not? Do I just have to set it out or can I warm it in water?
Thanks!!

I'm sure this is what you mean, but just to check (and to check if I'm right myself): you can't take body-temp milk you've just pumped and pour it into milk that's been stored in the fridge. You can, however, mix them once they're both chilled.

  • I mix mine refrigerated or not. I didn't know there was a problem in doing this. I haven't had any issues with LO or the BM.

Yep - one addition - you can mix room temperature milk too.  Just whatever you mix together should be the same temp (cold with cold, room temp with room temp)

My question is, what about thawed milk? Can I mix milk that is thawed from the freezer from different days?

Yep, though it's probably easier to combine and get to the ounces you need before freezing (put it in the fridge, make say a 4 oz serving, then freeze it)

I was told that they should finish a bottle within an hour due to the fact that babies tend to get their spit mixed in with the milk and it can cause bacterial growth, so that's what we did.  Yes, that means I wound up dumping milk.  That being said I've seen several posts with mommas that will put it back in the fridge and give to their baby at the next feeding with no problem.

Can i heat it again or not?

I don't see why not if you're comfortable using it again.  I'd only do it once though.

Do I just have to set it out or can I warm it in water?

I'd warm it in warm water, just based on what I've read about safe food handling in general - slow temperature changes seem to enable more bacterial growth.

    Thanks!!

  • Eh- I mix milk at different temps all the time.  It's never been a problem.  The only thing I'm careful about is using the milk before it's "bad" - a few hours at room temp, a few days in the fridge, 3-4 months in the freezer, or within 24 hours after defrosting.  I also don't reheat defrosted milk more than once, but otherwise I'd never throw away a bottle just because DD didn't finish it.  Just put it back in the fridge.
