WTF Mom?! vent

My mom and stepdad gave O honey nut cheerios this morning. What's the problem with that? O is allergic to peanuts. Grrr.... I am pretty upset about it and they're acting like it is no big deal.

They said he didn't have a reaction but I can still see the marks around his mouth hours later. Ugh, and their excuse for giving them to him was they never even thought about it.

I made a point last night when they picked him up to let her know where the benadry and epi pen were along with all his foodrestrictions because he's allergic to milk too.

I know they are down playing it because they don't want me to be mad but seriously, allergies are a big deal. I'm going to have to talk with them about it because next time it could be a big issue/problem. Dammit, why couldn't she have paid attention the first time

  • My mom did this with Griff and his egg allergies before. I was so effing pissed off and I really gave it to her. Shes really careful now with what she feeds him lol.

I'm glad LO is ok though. Next time the reaction could be more severe so I'd definitely have a talk with your mom.

  • I didnt know that they contain peanuts. G is allergic, too.

I'm sorry your parents are downplaying this. It's scary!

  • Ok, I got home and did some research. Honey nut cheerios don't contain peanuts, they are flavored with almond something or other. So, I over reacted on that account.

They fessed up to the hives though. They gave him cottage cheese this morning. O's milk allergy isn't terrible but bad enough that it causes skin reactions. I'm happy it wasn't a peanut reaction but the fact they are feeding him things without any thought of his allergies is seriously distressing.

We talked and they said they'd be more careful next time but geez, come on, they had a list of things he can't have. I really don't want to have to worry about sending him to his grandparents house.

  • Tell your mom and step dad not to worry. Next time they can just take LO out on the highway and let him run around. You know, may be he'll be fine, maybe he'll get hit, maybe he'll only fall and get a little hurt.

A friend used this with her mom and they havn't had a problem since ;)

Seriously though, I'm glad LO is ok, but I'm sorry you have to go through this with them.

  • We also have an epipen for a peanut allergy.  My MIL offered Nate a PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH last time we were there!  She looked surprised when I flipped out and was like, oh, I forgot.  My father offered him a REESES CUP at their house!!  This is why I've started hiring babysitters or asking my Type A sister to watch him at our house!  When I do have them watch him, I've started taking all the food he is to consume and leaving a huge note taped to it about remember he has a nut allergy!  No nuts of any kind!  Thankfully, our daycare is super concerned and checks all packages and everything.  Due to my child, they won't even let nuts in the door anymore! :)  Too bad the grandparents aren't so careful or even remember!  We live in the same town as both sets too, so it's not like we only see them every once in awhile!
