Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Chemical Pregnancy, do I need to go to the ER?

Hi ladies, I was due to get my period on Thursday....I took two HPTs, one on Thursday evening and one Friday morning they were both very faintly positive. I took a third test Friday evening, also faintly positive, but darker than before! But then, woke up at 6:30am, feeling very wet.. I had bled through my umderwear and pants.... I have had light cramps and period like bleeding all day. Ive definatly had worse cramps with a period than what I am experiencing. I of course assume that I am having a miscarriage. I would have only been about 4 wks 2 days.. and If I wouldnt have tested, I would have only missed my period by 2 days... so My question is, should I have went to the ER? Should I still go? Is there even anything that they could do? I plan on calling my OB first thing Monday morning. This would be my 3rd child, but my first after being on the Mirena IUD for 5 yrs. I have heard M/C is common after Mirena. :-( I hope this is not true, and it's not going to continue this way for me.

Re: Chemical Pregnancy, do I need to go to the ER?

  • I have experienced 2 miscarriages (one at 9 weeks and one at 7 weeks) I only went to the ER for the first one because I was bleeding heavily. I would call your OB right away in the morning and let them know what is going on. It sounds like you are having a miscarriage. There is nothing they can really do for you and since it is early you will most likely pass all the tissue naturally. If you experience heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad in 3 hours or less) you need to make a trip to the ER. So sorry for your loss :( Even though it's early, it's still sad. Not sure about Mirena, I've never used that. Praying everything goes smoothly for you!

  • I'm very sorry.

There is absolutely nothing they can do if you go to the ER.  If the pain becomes really, really bad then there may be a concern about ectopic but that would be more intense than a regular period.

I had a biochemical pregnancy earlier this month which ended at 5 weeks.  It was pretty much like a regular period (mine are pretty heavy anyway.)

Call  your OB Monday.  He/She may want to do a blood test in a week or so to make sure your hcg levels are returning to normal.

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I too suffered a MC in July after being on the Mirena IUD for 2 1/2 yrs.  I was 5w3d and my OB told me it was a chemical pregnancy.  I didn't go to the ER but I was in contact with her and she basically told me there was nothing that could be done, unless I was bleeding excessively and going through more than 2 pads in a 1 hr that I would probably pass everything naturally and I did.  I didn't have anything more than real bad menstrual cramping.  Sorry for your loss and I hope this helps!!

  • I'm sorry for your loss, it does sound like a chemical pregnancy. As PP mentioned, there is nothing they can really do at the ER. Calling your OB is probaly a great idea just so it can be noted. With that being said, we're not Drs, so if you feel safer going to the ER or are in a lot of pain, go a head and do so. I'd hate for you to not go with your gut feeling because we said so. Hugs

  • You only need to go to the ER if you are bleeding through a pad in an hour or so. Most CP's are generally like a normal period, maybe a tad heavier and crampier and do not require medical attention.

    I'm sorry for your loss

  • Hi, I'm just commenting to say that I'm sorry for your loss but I'm glad you mentioned the Merina IUD.  There seems to be a lack of information out there on how it effects subsequent fertility.

I was on Merina for about 6 years and I chose the Merina after thinking real long and hard about what birth control was right for me.  I chose it because I thought it had limited side effects.

When my Dr. removed it in March, she told me I would be immediately fertile.  It wasn't until later when I was surfing the web that I found out this might not be true . . .

I guess it was somewhat true because I did get pregnant that month, only to lose it a few days after my missed period, like you.

4 months later, I got pregnant again.  This time it stuck for 8 weeks.  And now I've miscarried again.  I wonder how much of this has to do with the Merina and how much of it has to do with how I am/bad luck . . .

I guess we'll never know . . . its just a scary prospect that we do stuff to our bodies that the medical community sanctions but about which it doesn't know much . . .

  • Thanks ladies. And I am afraid of what the more a has done to my body, maybe nothing but I was pregnant so easily with my first two so this scares me a bit. But I have also aged 5 years and so has my husband do I feel like I can't only blame the mirena, as I could have this problem without it.. But who knows. Thanks for all the advice ladies!
