University of Pittsburgh Maternity leave?

Anyone know how the maternity leave works.  From what I can see is that you don't get any paid maternity leave but you can use you sick time and vacation time for up to 12 weeks without losing your job.  This is super annoying.  I have worked for Pitt for 5 years and will be ok with my maternity leave for baby 1 but what about baby 2 or 3.   I know my HR rep would have these answers but I am not ready to tell work that I am pregnant.  I tried searching these boards but nothing ever comes up in my searches.  I must be doing something worng.

Any help would be great thanks.

Re: University of Pittsburgh Maternity leave?

  • I have yet to contact HR, but a coworker has told me that aside from FMLAs 12 weeks of unpaid leave that guarantees you a position equal to that of your previous position (usually your same job), short term disability kicks in at 52% of your pay (of course that's taxed) after 30 days off and after you've used up your sick and vacation days.  However, I think I may have also heard that you don't have to use your vacation days, just sick days, and you can also throw in your personal days.  I'm assuming you're asking as staff.  I think faculty is completely different.  HR needs to know about 2 months before your due date to fill out the FMLA and whatever other paperwork is necessary.

Hope this helps, if only just a bit.

  • Currently on maternity leave.  30 calendar day elimination period before short term disability kicks in.  You can use sick/vacation time during the elimination period to be paid during that time.  STD is 60% of your salary from the end of the elimination period until the end of 6 weeks (vaginal birth) or 8 weeks (c/s).  After that if you have it, you can use sick/vacation to cover full salary up to the end of 12 weeks post-delivery for FMLA. If you're out of sick/vacation you can take unpaid leave for the FMLA time as well and the university will still cover their portion of your insurance premiums during that time.

Or you can use sick/vacation the who time to be paid at full salary.

If I could go back in time, I would get a supplemental insurance policy several months before TTC so that I could have been paid during the latter portion of my leave.  If you're not pregnant yet, definitely look into that option.
