If your DD has long-ish hair, what shampoo do you use?

Do you use an all-in-one, a separate shampoo & conditioner, or a shampoo and just a tangle spray after? Tell me brand, price, etc.

I'm using the Suave kids 2-in-1 right now but DD has had some random scalp itching issues recently and i'm wondering if it's her shampoo.  She has thin/fine hair that tangles super easily.

FWIW DD has super sensitive skin and still only bathes every other night (unless she is swimming or using sunscreen or doing something super dirty) so it takes her forever to go through shampoo.  This makes me hesitant to start buying stuff and then have whole bottles go to waste if it doesn't work for her...

I don't even know where to start but figure I have to switch away from kiddie shampoo sometime, right? I don't think the shampoo that I use on my hair would work for her (I use smoothing shampoos and stuff for color treated hair).

  • We use the same suave, but I put a little of my conditioner (tresume) after the shampoo. Maybe if she is sensitive you could do something like Johnson and Johnson and then a little bit of conditioner, but not on the scalp.

  • My DD has VERY long hair- down to her butt.  I use Dove shampoo and conditioner in one.  She uses Dove soap too. She has sensitive skin too.

  • We use Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo and grown-up conditioner because her knots are almost unmanageable.  I have to use J&J spray conditioner as well to be able to comb or brush it.  She has super-fine long-ish hair.  I work on the knots underwater in the tub.  I have her lay back so her hair is underwater and just try to smooth them out.

  • My DD has hair down her back...almost to her butt!

I use Suave 2 in 1 shampoo on her scalp, then Suave kid conditioner on the "ponytail" part of her hair, then towel dry.  Then spray with Suave leave-in conditioner spray, OR my detangler spray (It's a 10) if her hair is really knotty... this seems to work well for us.

    Good luck!

  • DD has really long hair that tangles easily also. We use the Suave kids 2in1 and a detangling spray. I have also used my Aveeno shampoo on her hair and then the spray.
I have sensitive skin and psoriasis on my scalp. The Aveeno shampoo is one of the only ones I can use.

  • I started using regular shampoo and separate conditioner.  I use whatever I have in that bathroom.  I actually picked up Pantene curly and then used whatever conditioner I am using - on more of the ends (not the roots).  I don't let her sit in the bath water with the shampoo/conditioner rinsed out.  For her body I use Aveeno eczema because she has sensitive skin.  We've had issues with Loreal's kids 2in1.  It makes her face get rashy, but typically other shampoos have been fine.  If she is really tangly, I use spray detangler, but I try to only do it on days she will be getting a bath later.

  • I started using Hair One (a rip off of Wen) which is not an actual shampoo, I use it on me and the kids and LOVE it.  And I am not usually a person to try "different" products but my hair has lost a lot of shine as I have gotten older and DD's hair was breaking from knots and we no longer need any other products to get all the knots out of her hair.  About once every week or two I need to use regular shampoo in my hair or it gets greasy.  And I use about 1/2 of what they recommend.

  • I use the same stuff I use on my hair. I tried a lot of different kids/baby brands and none if them worked to keep the tangles away. My sister is a stylist and buys me the huge jugs of professional Shampoo and Conditoner so I have plenty! DD1 hair is very long and thick though so it needs extra help and I use Loriel kids detangler too.

  • My twins also have fine hair that is long and tangles very easily. About 6 months ago I stopped using Suave 2-1 because it just wan't handling the tangles anymore and I had to deal with screaming kids everytime I had to comb out their hair after bath. I started using Fairy Tales. I bought the shampoo and the conditioner. It is a also a lice prevention shampoo and conditioner so that is a bonus since we are in school 5 mornings a week now the risk of lice goes up being in a school environment. What I love about this stuff is that the conditioner is made of all natural ingredients and you don't have to rinse it out, you can leave it in and it doesn't build up on the hair. Since I started leaving the conditioner in I am able to easily comb through their hair when wet.

I also bought the leave in conditioner spray to use as a detangler in the morning so I can pull their hair up in a ponytail for school. I usually only bath them about every 3 days because they both have dry skin and don't have any problems with tangles if I use this spray in the mornings. I get my through drugstore.com they have the best prices and sell the big bottles of shampoo and conditioner. I have seen it sold in CVS near the salon products (Redkin), but my store only have the shampoo. But other CVS stores may have both products, they also have the leave in conditioner spray (detangler) in CVS. It is more than I pay at drugstore.com, but you could purchase it there in the smaller size to see if you like it. If you google fairy tales you can check it out on their website.

  • I don't use kiddy shampoo. I would also steer clear of the J&J shampoos if your dd has sensitive skin. All mine do and reacted badly. I us Tresemme shampoo and conditioner on the girls, followed by spray leave in conditioner. If I didn't there would be no combing through the knots.
  • I use my own shampoo and conditioner for her, whatever it may be at the time, but always a separate conditioner. It works so much better - even the cheap stuff.

I just wanted to add that I've used Fairy Tales in the past and we've loved it! DD has relatively short hair but it's very thin and the detangling spray is amazing. They sell it at Ulta too, so you can pick it up there if you're ever shopping there for your own stuff.

  • DD's always had a lot of hair.  We use Suave kids shampoo, then the Suave kids conditioner.  The 2 in 1 isn't enough for DD.  Something else that has helped with tangles... a shower.  Every time she gets a bath, she still gets some tangles.  So we only do showers now.
