Hurricane during due date! advice on what to do?

I live in central FL and i'm due the day the hurricane hits. Adding to that I live in the country 40 min. away from the hospital. I'm scheduled to be induced the day after labor day, but i'm scared I will go into labor during this hurricane. Is there a way I can call the hospital and get induced early? or what? I'm terrified.

  • Call your Dr.

  • Relax.. there's only a small chance you will go into labour on your due date.

  • Is there a way you can stay at a hotel closer to the hospital? I would try and not stress about it, if you could.

  • I would call your doctor and see if he/she has any advice. No to sound alarmist, but I have heard the barometric pressure drops that come with big storms can cause people to go into labor. Regardless if that is true or not. it is always good to have a plan.

    Good luck!

This. Also, the tropical storm, not hurricane, is not predicted to make landfall until it passes through the Gulf near the panhandle and Alabama. I am pretty sure you will be fine. GL!

  • I think you'll be fine.  DH deals with hurricanes as part of his job, so he's been monitoring all the professional info on it (on the regular news they always hype that stuff up to make a better story), and in central FL you should be fine.

  • It will be rainy and stormy - but unlikely to get huricane conditions.  I would call the dr and get there advise.  My ob office sent out instructions of what to do if we went under huricane conditions.  Basically, it said get yourself to a safe place and stay there.  If you need to go to l&d - only bring 1 person everybody else is to stay put. If you are extremely high risk call the office for more info on your particular situation.

Thank you SO MUCH for being sane and reasonable. I feel like I am missing something with everyone freaking out about this storm. Its not even a hurricane yet! And if it does get to hurricane status its only a cat 1. It is veerrry clear to me that we have not had a large storm it way too long the way everyone is having a freak out over a simple category one storm. I swear we have thunderstorms here weekly that are just as bad. A prime example of the media trying to cause panic. Ridiculous.

To the OP I would say that very few women go into labor on their actual due dates. If you are that worried then get a hotel room closer to your hospital for a few days. Think of it as a pre-baby getaway. Or something. Otherwise just know that as a FTM your labor will very likely be plenty long enough for you to get to the hospital on time. Breathe.

  • Some new models are putting the hurricane on a track towards New Orleans.  Even if it does hit Florida, if you're in central FL, and it makes landfall at a Category 1 storm, chances are, by the time it reaches you, it'll just be a regular old thunderstorm.    I wouldn't sweat it and I certainly wouldn't ask your doctor for an induction based on the weather.

  • I'm really surprised that anyone is CFL is worried. I am not worried in the slightest.

I used to work for Florida Hospital and Adventist Hospital systems. They will still be open, still have all regular staff on hand, and in CFL all the roads shoudl be fine. The only time anything changed at the hospitals is if the State tells you to stay off the roads and they put some kind of curfew, when they sometimes have less staff for those reasons.

Things can change quickly, right now it is a 1 passing over the keys and into the Gulf, then will barely skirt the west side of FL. It might even go more to the West and not even touch FL.

To be induced early for these reasons is kind of silly and I think your doctors would tell you there is no reason to do this. Save the beds for someone that really needs them during this time if they go into labor because of the wacky weather pressure things.

You might go into labor tonight anyway and this wont' be a concern. ;-)
