Did they ever miss a twin on 1st US

Hi. I went in for an US at 5 weeks 5 days to make sure everything was okay. My hcg levels were very high, and the doc wanted to make sure everything was all good. The tech scared the crap outta me though. She said just because she didn't see one this time, doesn't mean another can show later. So now I am 9 weeks and have an appt on Monday for another. I am very nervous bc I just had a baby in April, and then MC in June. I had no idea we were trying for another, and surprise!! Here we are. lol I wish I could find the US they gave me, but there was something off to the side, but the tech didn't tell me what it was. When the office called me, they said the doc was not concerned for the US, but needs another one at the end of the month. I mean, I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I heard, after baby and a MC it is possible. I respect all of you eith twins, but it's not something I am wanting. The pregnancy is super hard, and then they're here, it's a ton of work. We shall see though, I can handle anything.

Re: Did they ever miss a twin on 1st US

  • Possible. 5w is really early (for an idea, the tech couldn't find either of my baby's sacs @ 4w, and both of them showed up @ our 6w - each measuring 2 days different in size). If you had fraternals and one implanted a couple of days before the other, you could easily find one sac at 5w and see few or no signs of the other (especially if they are on different depth planes). If she saw "something" off to the side at the 5w, it's definitely in the realm of possibility. I wouldn't say you should go announcing that you're going to have twins lol but I wouldn't rule it out until you get your new images on Monday :)

  • It's not impossible. At least, you'll know soon. I wouldn't stress about it too much until you know, but if it comes back that you are having twins-it'll be okay. The pregnancy does suck and the enormity of having two newborns sounds terrifying, but it sinks in over time. The women here are a great resource and everyone has found away to function and survive because you just don't have a choice! Good luck and let us know how it goes.

This is my siggy. Love it.

  • It's definitely possible. We went in at 7 weeks and saw 2 sacs, 1 empty They thought it was a vanishing twin. We went in a week later and saw 2 babies, 2 heartbeats. There is a lot a week can do!

  • At 5w5d they were able to clearly see 2 sacs, but no heartbeats yet. We went back 4 days later and they saw both heartbeats. So while it isn't impossible, I'd say it is unlikely to be twins. Betas have such a huge variance, they're not a good indicator of multiples. I've seen really high betas with singletons, and really low betas with twins.

  • At 10w5d my OB missed it until my DH said something and then she changed the angle and hello 2 babies in there!  They were in the same gestational sac and one was "hiding" behind the other.  Not as easy to miss if they are in separate gestational sacs.
  • My first u/s was at 5w2d and we saw both babies. They were just gestational and yolk sacs at the time, but they were both visible. At 6w2d, we say both HBs.

  • I had identical twins.  At 5w exactly, we saw only one.  I went back 2 weeks later and saw two.

  • I didn't have a u/s till 11w5d and almost right away the tech said, "There's two!" At 5w it is possible. Best of luck to you.
fraternal twin boys born january 2009
  • I'm totally lurking, but a friend of mine had an U/S with her first pregnancy with fraternal twins. One sac was hiding behind the other so they couldn't see both babies, but they heard both heart beats. For some reason the doctor thought that the second heart beat was my friend's and freaked out because it was so much higher than normal. After running tests they found out she was fine and let her go. She didn't find out it was twins until her second U/S appointment when both sacs were visible
