Pregnant after 35

antidepressants and pregnancy

soo I was on 100 mg of zolof and 300 mg of wellbutrin (sp?) I was put on the wellbutrin to reverse the affects of weight gain from zolof. I found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant. My Dr. suggested weening myself off the zolof and quiting wellbutrin. I have been on them ever since my divorce in 2007. I've been off the antidepressants for a week now.  I am so irritable and crabby. Little things are settng me off. I'm so crabby at my hubby and he is so great I feel terrible and I don't mean to be.  I don't know if this is from pregnancy or from not taking the meds. I will see my Dr. in 2 weeks and will ask her then.

I'm just wondering if anyone has an feedback whether they took anitdepressants through they're pregnancy or quit. Any advice, suggestions?

Re: antidepressants and pregnancy

  • I feel for you.  I quit, unilt about 5 minutes ago! There are SSRI's that are well studied your OB may recommend, but withdrawal alone is 8 weeks or more.  I am 10 wks, and had my first panic attack last night.  As early as last wk my pcp was useless when I tried explaining how much my anxiety was ruining my life.  He had me take melatonin to sleep, like sleep cures anxiety!  So I am trying an SSRI, with a little gult on the side.  But there is no reason logically~depression is an illness and if disrupts life and relationships it will effect baby too.

  • I took/take 20mg of prozac with DD's pregnancy and nursing her.  No problems.  I had to see a high risk specialist because I deliver early and they were fine with me taking it.

  • I took Wellbutrin when I was pregnant with my son until the third tri and he turned fine:)

It's one of those things where the benefits outweigh the risks then you should take that into consideration.  The first weeks of pregnancy can cause major mood swings so it could be that or it could be the meds.  You could wait and see if your mood improves w/o the meds, maybe meditate and regular activity?  Maybe even a therapist?  All of these things helped me when I decided to get off of my meds.

     Good Luck and Congrats!!

  • My first prenatal appointment was with the hospital mid-wife and she took me off all of my medications, including the ones for my mental health.  Less than two weeks later I had my first appointment with my actual OB and she put me back on one of them, at a slightly lower dosage, with instructions that I could take the other (for anxiety) med if I got to the point where I felt like I needed it.  I've been taking Lamictal (a mood stabilizer) since then and have been cleared to attempt to breastfeed while taking it when the time comes.  I also continue to have monthly monitoring sessions with my psychiatrist, to make sure my current dosage is enough to keep me stable.  If you are having problems and feel like you aren't able to handle mood swings or depression, definitely discuss it with your doctor.  I was told the risks of my depression and possible bipolar episodes outweighed the risks of being on the medication for my LO both now, and after I give birth.

  • thank you for all your replies... I'm def. gonna talk to my dr when I go back on the 3rd. to see what all my options are.  untill then I will just take it one day at a time. I'm hoping these mood swings are just pregnancy as I don't ever recall having them this bad in the past..

  • Be careful.  SSRIs including Zoloft have been linked to birth defects, especially when taken during the first trimester.  I know some people really need these medications, so you and your doctor will have to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks.  It would be better to hold off until 2nd trimester if you possibly can.  Good luck!
  • I quit after I found out I was pregnant. I weaned off my meds over time. Definatley not easy and its a personal choice.

    Best of luck to you

  • I weaned off them before we started trying and it was really difficult. That being said, it does get better over time. When I was on Clomid trying to make sure the eggies dropped, I was evil. Thank god, I hope we are past that now.
