Babies: 9 - 12 Months

No afternoon nap?

My DD is almost 10 months old and the last few weeks I have only been able to get her to take an afternoon nap a handful of times.  She sleeps 12 hours a night and takes a 2 hour morning nap but recently all she will do in the afternoon is stand and cry in her crib for 30+ minutes until I can't stand it anymore and go get her.  She used to have sleepy signs in the afternoon (yawning, rubbing her eyes) but she hasn't been doing this anymore.  I'm not sure if I should keep trying to put her down every afternoon or if I should give up.  Is she too young to drop her afternoon nap?

Re: No afternoon nap?

  • I would keep trying but that is just me. My ds went through this around ten months my rule was he stayed in his crib for an hour what he decided to do was up to him (he complained but didn't scream). Ds is now 13 months and still takes two naps.

  • My DD did this for a week or so, then went back to two naps. If your LO is still only taking the one nap, then I would push back the morning nap slowly to make it more of a midday nap. But give her a chance to work the naps out alone before you try moving times around. I was about to say goodbye to the afternoon nap, and then she decided she wanted it again. GL!

  • DD started giving up her afternoon nap and was going 7hrs straight w/ no nap and only taking a morning nap.  i ended up having to push back her morning nap 2hrs so now she'll take anywhere from 2.5-3hrs nap in the afternoon from about 12:30-3:30.

  • My LO sleeps 12+ hrs at night too, and he dropped down to one nap months ago (although his is in the afternoon since he sleeps late in the mornings). It's always worked for us, so I've never fought it.

  • Right at 11 mos our son started resisting the 2nd nap.  It's been three weeks of tweeking his schedule a bit in order to hold onto those two naps as long as we can.

If he sleeps longer than 11.5hrs at night, the first nap starts too late, and then the second nap is way too late.  So, after some researching what we've done is wake him in the morning after he sleeps about 11 hrs 15 mins (I HATE doing that, but right now we're trying to buy some time until he's really ready for just one nap).  The second thing I do, is limit the first nap to about an hour or hour and 10min.  Then the second nap happens without a fight and without it being too late in the day.

I think most kids have a total sleep amount they are capable of in a 24hr period.  Our son seems to be between 13-13.5 hrs.  Some need more, some need less.

Your LO is getting the correct amount of sleep between the long 12 hr night and that long first 2 hr nap.  Maybe try to disperse the sleep a bit and see if you can't bring that 2nd nap back.  10 mos is pretty early to be on just one nap.

  • DD dropped her nap too at 11 months.  Her daycare has her nap from 12:30-2:30, so we started doing that at home too to make it consistent for her.  She seems fine with it and if she looks tired again, I'll just put her down again.  Good luck!
