Worst parent ever or no biggie?

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/babblecom/inappropriate-picture-dad_b_1824832.html?utm_hp_ref=parents&ir=Parents

So I read the article, and in all honesty I could totally see my husband having a beer with our daughter wearing just her diaper. Not that I would post a picture of it, but I am not sure what to think about it. Am I being wildly naive to think that this isnt a huuuugeeee deal? Maybe not the best idea, but not the worst? Thoughts? I am kind of ambivalent about it...... and need some perspective?

Re: Worst parent ever or no biggie?

  • I don't see anything wrong with that picture. i think society plays too much of a part in the way others thing we should parent. We all have our own instincts and parent different ways, it doesn't mean we are wrong because we might not agree right? I have pics of me when I was little with the old Molson bottles on the table in the backround..and my mum is holding me and I'm happy. People like to have a beer or two after work (my dad happened to work for Molson lol) and theres nothing wrong with that. Tbh, I can't stand those who have the "how dare they" attitude towards everything UGH take a pill already.

  • what a sweet, lovely photo. Why would anyone object to this? I have photos of me like this except I am HOLDING A BEER (at age 3 or whatever)

  • WFT?!  I totally judge!  Miller Lite?  And from a can?  Seriously, if he's going to be a good dad, he needs better taste in beer.  Canned Lite is for beer pong only.  Grow up and drink Newcastle like a real man.

  • Wow...I was expecting something much worse, but honestly, I don't think it's that bad.  I'm not sure that I would have even thought anything of it, had I not read all the commentary beforehand.  I mean, I guess it could be better or worse depending upon a lot of small details that you can't tell from the picture itself, but is the picture in and of itself a big deal???  I just don't see it.

  • Yeah, The beer isn't an issue. I am jealous of that man's beer.

At first, I could kind of see the point in some of the comments, but then I realized that it was on babble, a site (somewhat) similar to the bump, and people have their diaper babies in their siggies here all the time. I think I agree with Laura that it probably isnt the best taste to put it online. I would rather be safe than have someone have a picture of my kid who shouldn't (am I going to be that kind of mom? I didnt think so, but maybe). However, I am totally cool with having my naked kid run around my [fenced in] backyard under my own supervision.

For some reason, a picture of a baby in a diaper in a signature doesn't bother me, while actually seeing said baby out in public does.  I can think of several such sig pics that are really freaking cute. I don't know how it's different to me, but it is.

If the little girl didn't look naked, I would be more likely to post it online, but again, I'm still kind of paranoid so I don't know...I'm big on private FB albums.

I didn't actually read the article so I'm not sure what people said, but if it was a Bump-like site it was probably way overblown.

It is kind of a bump like site minus the forums. AND to clarify, putting a kid with only a diaper in a shopping cart/ out in public is not ok or cool. It is weird, unless you are at a water park and its a swim diaper.

  • Not a big deal at all. I judge the people who are judging the photo because it seems to me that they are sexualizing a situation/photo that is not sexual in any way.

  • Totally don't get why this is a big deal. We as Americans sexuality everything, I don't see anything wrong with a child in a diaper or undies or what not and what's the big deal about the beer, are parents not allowed to drink either?  I think this is blown way out of proportion.

  • I would never post a picture of my child naked on the internet b/c people are creepy. Otherwise I see no issue with a daughter in a diaper sitting with her father

I *think* what the comments were freaking out about was the fact that pedophiles could not access the photo because it was posted on a public site. Not likely to happen, but could. And yes, I think we do sexualize a lot of things. Had I seen the pic outside of the article, I probably wouldn't have thought too much about it. But, FWIW, all my photos on FB are private (only visible to friends) and will stay that way when LO is here.

My pics are private as well. So yes, I guess I can understand that.

  • Had to reply because the focus has been on the photo, but not the original article (found here: https://blogs.babble.com/babble-voices/he-said-she-said/2012/07/26/old-work-boots-camouflage-cargos-how-not-to-let-your-man-fall-out-of-fashion/#joe-cool-ish).  Going through the photo montage and context around the photo - it all makes much more sense. The unnecessay sexualization of the image is ridiculous having read through it all.

Yeah.. His shorts and combat boots are hilarious. My DH would do something like that. A-dorkable

  • No big deal! My parents had worse pictures of me when I was little including ones with me holding a cigarette in my mouth (not lit or anything).

I think here things are overly sexualized like for example a couple I know through mutual friends had their kids taken away by CPS because they had pictures of their very young children naked on their computer (these days everything is digital and you put them on the compute before you print them). They werent on the interent or anything but the dad took the comp to get repaired and the tech called the police. Took them almost a year to get their children back.

    * Would like to note that in some cultures taking pics of your kids naked isnt a big deal, and them being in a family album is common.

Likely not. Which, if their concern is pedophilia, is kind of skewed, because a lot of the victims are male children.

This is exactly why I was thinking that. Pedophilia is directed just as much towards boys and honestly, when in a diaper.....girls and boys look the same. So they knock him for piutting a pic like this of his little girl but if it was his son it probably would have been "cute". I just don't get it.

Ah yes. Just another thing that has happened to me. We were out sightseeing in Vancouver and DS blew through his outfit so I changed him. He blew out the next outfit. And was a naked baby in Vancouver until I bought him a $30 Hatley romper.

Mostly, I'd agree with you though. However, I don't think porch constitutes public and I think the picture is pretty stinking adorable.

Also, can someone please teach me how to quote one individual w/o grabbing the whole thread? I am a noob. But Starry pointed out that it made her eyes bleed.. and I felt totally crappy for doing it. It's messy.

And FTR - no, I wouldn't really judge that photo.  I really don't see anything wrong with it. (except for the man's bad taste in beer Wink )

I would say it's pretty common in the US as well.  We'll have pics like that (we just won't post them online).  It's horrible that that couple had their kids taken away for this.  I could see the tech calling the police, but it should have been easily cleared up when they explained that they were pictures of their kids.

I know I don't think i would post any on my FB account either (not that anyone besides my family and friends can see them). The couple didn't have any on interent sites just their personal computer. Luckily they got their chirlden back now.

People overreact. That is just how silly people are nowadays.

  • I personally think the picture is really cute! I would have "liked" it if I was friends with him on facebook. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I also don't find anything inappropriate about the naked human body and the little girl doesn't look like she is being forced to be naked in a photo. Only adults are prude enough to find the naked body inappropriate.

  • I actually think it's an adorable picture and I wouldn't have any problem posting a similar shot of my husband and child on facebook. I don't really like to see kids in just diapers in public but they're at home and tons of kids that age are hard to keep clothes on at home. DS1 was naked all the time once he learned to get his clothes off. Parents really need to stop judging and shaming each other constantly over every little thing.
