Tell me about comparing prices on groceries and other necessities

I've always been pretty frugal - coupon clipper, check out circular for sales on food we already purchase and stock up on non-perisables, etc.  But I don't know if we're REALLY getting the best deal.  Circulars don't have every single item and I'm sure there are things marked down that I don't see printed.  I suppose I could go to the 3 local grocery stores and Costco (2 grocery stores are less than 5 minutes from our house, Costco and 3rd grocery store are about 10-15 minutes from our house, we usually stop wherever is on the way home when we are running errands) and write down the prices of all the stuff we buy regularly.  But man, that seems like A LOT of work!  How do you ladies compare prices to make sure you aren't overspending?  TIA!

  • Over the nest few weeks keep a list in your purse of the items you buy the most. Keep track of what sale prices are offered. Then you will have a baseline to measure the sales.

  • There are also websites that will give you heads up when larger stores have big sales, especially when they correspond with coupons.   My favorite one is www.hip2save.com    but there are many to choose from.

  • I follow several local blogs that match-up coupons and sale prices and tell me what the best deals are at several stores each week. I usually just go to 1 grocery store and 1 drug store weekly. My regular grocery store is one of the least expensive stores in my area, (a Kroger store) and I use their rewards card and have a store CC so I earn 2% back on store purchases each quarter. I know which things are usually less at Costco and purchase those items there about 1x/month. (Butter, almonds etc) I also go to Trader Joe's about 1x/month for 'healthier' convenience items and snacks.

I bookmark the weekly ads on my computer so I can search online quickly before heading to the store.  I know from buying items what they normally run, and have looked at the other stores while out to see which one has the better price normally.  Other than that, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit a store to just see if it has better prices... I think the extra time wasted and gas money just isn't worth it.

  • I just try to use coupons when I can and shop at Wal-mart or Target with my 5% discount.  I've found that stores adjust the prices A LOT so you would constantly have to keep updating your list.  For example, I buy ice cream bars and they range from $3.98 to $5.24 at the exact same Wal-mart depending on the week/season.
