Hearing screening repost from 0-3

DD is 9 weeks old today and has failed 3 separate hearing screenings. The first two times they said that she really wasn't still enough to get a good reading, but that meant she failed. Today she had an OAE and didn't pass that. They scheduled an appt for October for a more in-depth test.

I know she can hear because she will startle at loud noises. But we don't know if there is a certain degree of hearing loss. Does anyone have any experiences with this? Thanks!

  • Does she stay still for the tests?

DD is a huge wiggler and they had to redo them a few times before she sat through the probe enough to pass. They even tried having me nurse, but she still shook her head when they would stick it in her ear.

  • No she hasn't been still at all. She talks, moves, etc. I hope that's what it is. I just hate to wait until October 10 to find out!
  • My little one didnt pass her left ear newborn screening and we had to do that awful loooooong screening at 9 weeks. we scheduled for the morning 9 am i think. she usually wakes up about 6 or so. Her last feeding was at 5. We just kept her awake with fresh air and walks and playing and i stayed in th eback seat with her while my husband drove to make sure she wouldnt sleep. When we got to the apt. she ate 5 oz, I swaddled her in her pjs and she slept for 1 1/2 hours and they got most of the test done!
  • they said they high registers is the most common hearing loss. She wasnt registering for the really low tones on both ears but they said newborns make so much noise evern when sleeping like tummy noises that it could block them out. So we will go back when she is 8 months and they will test for the low tones. They said at the very worst she may have some low register hearing loss, but she seemed to feel confident because both ears failed that it was just her making some noises. we will see in a few months! But i definitely recomend trying to get the little one to sleep, there is NO WAY she would have passed otherwise.
