Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Tummy time fail

My DD is 4 months and still hates tummy time. We have tried everything to get her to like it..,laying on the floor, talking, mirrors, toys.  Is it really that big of a deal?  She can sit up with help and hold her head up great. I'm just worried becuase I see friends who have babies the same age that can support themselves on their arms (I know every baby is different but it is hard not to compare).

Also any tips on getting her to like a pacifier? I am hoping it will help her self soothe but she will only take it for a few seconds and then spit it out (have tried 2 different kinds maybe we need to buy every shape?)

Re: Tummy time fail

  • T hates his tummy time too. The odd time he will lift his head up and does well. At first he would either scream or fall asleep.

Now he lays there sucking his hand. We just keep trying. He sits nicely and holds his head well too. I think the tummy time is so they are not always on their back and also to help promote crawling in the future. I am pretty sure once C starts crawling, T will follow suit or be left in the dust. LOL

  • So, for tummy time.  L is only now starting to enjoy it and will stay down for a little while.  Before now, we would just try for a few mins at a time, a few times a day.  She likes the mirror, and most times, I have to be on the floor with her for her not to fuss.

Pacifiers.  Have you tried 2 different kinds, or brands?  L doesnt keep the silicone ones in her mouth for more than a few seconds, but will keep the latex ones in forever.  You literally have to pry them out of her mouth.  We had to order them on Amazon, I couldnt find them in the store, but maybe try those?

  • My LO hated..HATED tummy time until he was 3mo. We just kept trying it over and over. Eventually each try became longer and longer before he would flip out(first 3 min, then 5min now we can get 15minutes at a time!).He loves it. DH and I think he hated it so much because he couldn't hold himself up with his arms, so until he could, we did tummy time while he lied on our tummies and we lied on our backs. It gave him a chance to practice holding himself up and gain that arm strength. We also did a lot of upsie daisies during diaper changes to build arm and upper body strength. I really do think those things in combination helped get him to like tummy time. seemed like once he got that arm strength and could hold his torso up while lying on us, he didn't mind tummy time so much on the floor. Within a month, he started rolling from tummy to back! Hope this helps!

  • I guess we will keep trying! i was able to get about 4 mintues today before she was mad.  i have tried to different nipples on pacifiers..one was shaped like a nipple we got at the hospital and another was an avent one that was more flat (orthodontic i think)

  • My baby likes tummy time a lot better ever since I started having her do it not always on the floor. For example, we will play "super baby" where I lay on my back, put my legs up, put her on my legs face down, and zoom her around a bit. Or, I will hold her on my arm, tummy down. She got more used to being tummy down and while she doesn't love tummy time, she tolerates it for much longer when I do give her tummy time on the floor.

Dd has only just started liking tummy time. Like last week. Don't stress about it.

  • We got a special "tummy time" mat off of Amazon. It sounds gimmicky, but it worked. It has this little pillow that props her up perfectly so that she doesn't have to struggle to keep her face off the floor (we had another mat with a pillow but it didn't do the job like this) and lots of bells and whistles right within her reach, including a mirror, which I know you said didn't work for you but this one has an adjustable folding velcro stand (hard to explain, you kind of have to see it) that allows you to make it so that the mirror is at the perfect height depending on how LO is lying.

A couple of days on this mat, and presto, she loves tummy time anywhere. She sleeps on her stomach now too, and will not stay on her back. She is always rolling to her stomach. Problem is, she still can't roll over the other way, so she gets stuck there and DH and I have to constantly come to her rescue and flip her over.

Don't know if this gizmo will work for you, but I just wanted to mention it. Here's a link:
