3rd Trimester

Depends? (underwear for after the birth)

I've heard from a few moms that they use depends in place of underwear for the first few days (or weeks depending on the mama) and they LOVE them.  (obviously I'm talking after delivery)

I've never worn them - but this idea seems like the right now.  A few questions.. do you then not wear a pad?  Just the depends?  And what size do you get?  I presume a large one?

Is there a 'kind' that seems better?  (store / generic / brand / type)

THANKS!

Re: Depends? (underwear for after the birth)

  • I wore the mesh panties from the hospital with the large pads and then I wore normal underwear over it (the mesh panties didn't fit right). This worked well for me. Personally, the quicker I got back to normalcy (wearing regular clothes, getting back to my regular routine) the better I felt.

If I were to buy them I'd go with a name brand - I don't use generic/store brand pads - there's just some things I prefer name brand on. For the one or two packages you'd buy I think it would be better to go with Depends or another name brand. I'd guess there are weight suggestions on the package - I'd go off that. If you get a size larger I don't know if they'd fit as well.

  • Umm...Unless you wear Depends when you have your period, I don't know why you would wear them after having a baby.
  • I wore my own underwear & used my own pads (Always Ultra over night ones). Big and bulky but I liked them better than the hosptial ones because they have the wings. And I hated the Mesh undies.

I wouldn't ever think of depends. They are really for pee, not a heavy period.

  • I just can't get down with changing a newborn diaper, my toddler diaper and then MY diaper.

Do women wear depends while they're on their period too?

  • I really didn't find the bleeding to be that bad.  I definitely wouldn't use depends.

  • I was thinking about going this route this time around.  IDK, but it somehow makes me feel like there is better coverage there.  I was planning on ditching the pad while using the depends.  As far as size, I was going to look at the weight guidelines and go from there.  I was planning on just getting the generic but that isn't set in stone.  They did not make a pad that absorbed or protected as much as I needed with DS.  I was constantly changing my pad and leaked all the time.  I was thinking that depends may help with that and at least save some undies.

  • Wawa84 - I am doing the same thing, for the same reasons.

My sister-in-law is a nurse and she recommended using depends to save underwear, ensure "protection/pad" stays in place, and certain versions feel more like comfortable underwear as opposed to bulky pads.

I have never been a pad person, just can't find any that feel comfortable and/or stay in place, etc... So, for me, the question isn't would you wear depends for your period, it's would you wear a pad?  Nope.

  • I wore the mesh panties the hospital provided with the monster hospital pads while I was in the hospital. When I got home I wore the same mesh panties they wash in the washer with Always overnight pads. I never had any troubles with leaks. I think going with Depends is a bit extreme, plus I don't even know if they would work the way you are hoping. You could just double up on pads overlap middle so each goes up a little higher. This would probably be more comfortable than diapers. I've seen the mesh panties at rite aid if you wanted to stock up, but you'll get them at the hospital as part of your stay.

My thinking exactly. Pads with wings will do the trick for me, and I bled pretty badly after DS.

  • I wore the took a bunch of mesh underwear and pads from the hospital.

  • You might search for a sample.  I've gotten 2 samples in the mail that came with S/M & L/XL pair

  • My cousin recommended them after having her son six months before I had ds. I loved them. They were much more comfy than those huge hospital pads and the mesh undies for me. I read the package, so I knew what size to buy. I didn't wear them with pads at the beginning. I'd just change them whenever needed. Once the bleeding slowed down, I used Always Infinity and wore them like disposable underwear. I didn't ruin any undies with ds and nobody was any the wiser. And to the pp who asked, I had a few left over from the package I bought and so for the next couple of months, I sure did wear them the first day of my period with a pad to ensure no leakage occurred and no undies killed in the process. It worked quite nicely. I didn't continue once I was out, but I'm not ashamed or sad that I used them. They worked brilliantly and I'm doing the same again with this birth.

  • No depends for me! The worst was probably the first 24 hours after you give birth, after that it really wasn't all that bad. In fact I never even once used the sits bath to soak.

If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done

  • I really dont think its necessary to buy depends. I wore the mesh panties and the large pads the hospital provided. They werent very comfortable but by the time I was discharged, the bleeding wasnt crazy heavy. I wore Hanes cotton underwear with Always overnight pads with wings.

What a great idea!  My mom actually uses Depends from time to time and I plan on asking her if I could borrow a few (I'm just not sure the size will work)

What awesome feedback - I think I'll have both on hand and see how I feel.. but I have used pads a lot... and I can see where having the extra.. 'protection' would be nice :)

  • I have some of these left over from when I had surgery for my endometriosis. If I am bleeding excessively, I would consider trying them out. Not sure how much to expect (FTM) and I hear it is different for every woman.
  • I've purchased some men's black boxer briefs to wear to bed now - they're big enough to go over my belly and the legs are long enough to prevent my legs getting sweaty and sticking to each other at night. I'm going to wear them as underwear - with a pad - after my son is born to save my own underwear if there are leaks. I'm not going to do depends, I agree that it feels like the sooner you can get back into regular clothes, the better you're going to feel.
