December 2010 Moms

What's your splurge?

Everyone has one thing they just can't stop spending money on-what is it for you?

For me it is totally cute hair accessories.  We just finished moving and I think I have over 100 headbands.  It is really a problem.

Re: What's your splurge?

  • For my kids:  Clothes! (I always think, oh they would look so cute in THAT!)

For me:  Crafting supplies (paper sales, accessories at craft stores, I'm there!)

I'm hoping to get my newest DD into headbands.  N will not let me put anything on her head.  I think she stopped letting me at 9 months

  • Good food and alcohol...DH and I love to eat out at nice places. Plus, DH has been really enhancing his cooking skills so we're buying more fresh meat and produce. Plus we are beer and cocktail snobs and have just started liking wine, so we probably spend too much on that too.

We're pretty thrifty in most aspects of our life but this is one area where we are absolutely not.

  • I love clothes...I buy a lot for myself! For A, it is toys...so hard to stop when I think something can be educational and that he would love it!

Pre-b it was travel and eating out.  Now it's just eating out.  I love food and flavors.

Also, Pilates is a recent splurge, but it's helping me actually get exercising so it's a justified splurge.

This! We are total foodies. We shop at the farmers market and spend way too much just to get really good stuff. And if we are going out to eat, we really think nothing of dropping quite a bit of cash just eat somewhere nice. PreGriffin, we did that a lot. Now with him, it's much less often.
  • Probably just going out to eat. And we don't even do it *that* often, but it's really the only thing we spend a considerable amount of money on that's not considered a necessity.

  • Oh crap, I can't think of one! Neither can DH or my stepdaughter. I used to splurge on books and yarn, but not anymore. The library is my friend and I have little time to knit.

I really miss alcohol. I daydream about this fabulous wine & cheese bar MH used to go to in NYC pre-Anthony, or this restaurant in Jersey City that carried all local seasonal brews...they have a strawberry beer in the summer...I can still smell it in my head...the first whiff I get carried in the breeze when the server would pop the cap off the bottle at our rooftop table....I'm crying on the inside right now.

  • Pre-C, it was absolutely travel.  We've gone a ton of places and I'm glad we made the splurges now.

Now, uh, is it sad my first thought was daycare?  Yes, yes it is sad.  We sacrifice to send C to a great place.  For us though, it is probably eating out to some degree and definitely coffee!  Our SB habit isn't really bad, but we're both pretty much coffee snobs and really like to have quality beans and real half and half.

LOL, when I was pregnant all I wanted was a really good ice cold glass of tap beer. I tried o'doul's but it wasn't the same.

Our splurge right now is the wedding. But we also spend a lot of money on food. We joke that we have become food snobs.

  • For me - lululemon (I justify because I work from home and I LIVE in lulu) and wine.  I like to buy local wines from small wineries that often cost more.  For DH it's golfing all the time, and for DD it's clothes?
  • Kids clothes. I am obsessed with getting a sale. I have loads of coupons and cash cards and I make it a point to use them before they expire. I am planning ahead and buying the next size up on the clearance racks for the next year because with 3 boys...someone will fit into it at some point lol

For myself, scrapbooking materials even though I have no time to scrapbook haha

  • Before babies it was travel. Now... Nothing I can think of. We are pretty low on money right now so I've given up most splurges. Color my own hair... Hand me downs for the boys.... Cheap wine. Sad but it's worth it not to be strapped.
  • Cosmetic procedures I suppose. I'm kind of weird in that I'm too cheap to pay to get my nails done, a massage or wax, but then I'll spend $$$ on something like laser hair removal or permanent makeup.
