Older DD has MRSA

I took my 24-month old DD to the doctor on Monday for what looked like a pimple in her diaper area. I thought it was diaper rash, but then it suddenly caused the area to swell, and I was worried. Doctor sent us immediately to the hospital to get it drained and start IV antibiotics. It was a horrible time in the hospital. DD would not hold still for anything (understandably) and had to have general anesthesia, so couldn't eat or drink anything for 8 hours before. Ugh. Just horrible. And, to make matters worse, DD2 doesn't take a bottle, so she was with us the whole time.

Anyway, her test results came back positive for MRSA. Though, things are improving drastically with antibiotics, I'm just worried sick for both my daughters. Neither of them have ever even been sick, really--not even diaper rash or a fever or ear infection...nothing. And now I'm sanitizing the heck out of my house, stocking up on Dial, separating laundry,

Anyway, just curious if anyone else has dealt with MRSA? My kid's never been to daycare or a hospital or anywhere that MRSA is typically picked up. So...just warning you all, this stuff is crazy and random. If you see anything out of the ordinary on your LOs, trust your instincts and get it checked out!

  • :( Oh, how scary. I am so sorry that your little one is having to deal with this! How lucky that you trusted your instincts!

Did the doctors give any ideas into how she possibly got it??? Public changing table?

I'll be sending healthy thoughts your family's way!

  • Unfortunately MRSA had moved out of hospitals into normal areas like the supermarket over the last few years. It's because healthcare workers aren't religious about hand washing like they should be, and they do things like go to the store wearing their scrubs after work, carrying MRSA into gas stations, restaurants, etc. I'm so sorry your poor baby is suffering, but know that it's likely not something you could have prevented. I hope your DD has a quick recovery. Again, I'm so sorry.

It's so widespread these days, that it literally could've been anywhere. Library, grocery store, play group, park. It's fairly easy to keep things clean for a little tyke who's not mobile yet like my younger DD, but you never know what the bigger toddlers have touched. The best thing you can do to prevent it is wash you and LO' hands frequently. It's funny, because DD hates having her hands messy and loves washing them ohso independent these days, so it's ironic to me that she still contracted this somehow.

  • A close friend of mine's daughter has MRSA. They were sent to the CDC and a nurse there told them that she likely got it from her pediatricians office. Like other posters have said, MRSA is everywhere now.

You should definitely follow the advice your doctor gives you. I'm going to tell you what my friend does though. She doesn't separate laundry or anything, she was told that the heat of the washing machine will kill it. She has a little boy that doesn't have it. Whenever her DD gets a sore, she keeps it covered so it doesn't spread.

I hope your LO doesn't have to many issues with it. MRSA is difficult to deal with.

Thanks. My older DD tested positive for it in the one sore she had. But, the doc called today to say her nasal swab came back negative for it. So, good news there, they think once this sore is cleared up, she may not get others. "She is not a carrier," as they put it. Hmm...
