I haven't been on here for months because we moved from Ohio to Colorado over the summer. Our new school district out here offered us a GPS tracking bracelet (looks like a large watch) for ds if we would like one at no cost to us, the other ASD kids in the district have them because of a grant the district got. The purpose of it is if they would happen to wander off we could call 911 here and they would be able to track him down quickly and find him. We live in the mountains, so if ds were to wander off he very likely could end up lost in the forest.
My DH is all for the bracelet because our nephew (borderline ASD) wandered off in the middle of the night when he was 5. I'm undecided on the whole thing. Does anyone here have one of these bracelets? Have any opinions on them? Good or Bad?
Re: GPS bracelet for ASD kids?
I just wanted to say hi from another Ohio native who ended up in CO. ::waves::
I'm from the Toledo area originally, went to school in Cleveland, and worked in Canton for a few years.
I don't have one of the bracelets, but I am considering getting a non-GPS medical alert bracelet for DD1 (ASD) b/c I worry about her ability to communicate basic info in an emergency if she was really stressed, even though she knows our names, address, phone numbers, etc.
That's a pretty cool program and I'd definitely consider it if I thought DD1 was prone to wandering (if anything, she goes the opposite way and sometimes gets very anxious if I'm in another room b/c she thinks I've left without her) or we lived in the mountains (we're in the northern burbs). It's not uncommon even for capable adults to get lost up there -- and some of them die every year. And there always seems to be at least one story every year about how a family goes to chop down their own Christmas tree and gets lost b/c they can't find their car again.
Between an unforgiving landscape, sparsely populated area and large predators, I think it's probably a good idea.

I think the bracelet is a great device for ASD kids. I don't have one for ODS because I didn't know about them when he was little, but for YDS we might get one.
If your LO is prone to wandering about, I think it's a great investment.
