First of all, sorry about being a PW and the fact that my posts always get long, but the board is slow! I went in this morning to get DS's weight and length checked as I felt like he had a growth spurt and I like to make sure they are documented in his chart since we have dealt with slow growth. So, its a new nurse, most likely a "float" nurse from her different nametag, so she doesn't know us or that I used to work at the clinic. She starts with the usual questions of how is he eating, pooping, etc, and do you have any concerns. I told her nope, just curious to what he weighs. She asks if he is on solids and I said solids and breastmilk. She looked shocked and asked if he had any whole milk at all and I explained that he can't have dairy and even if he could that we will be BF at least through the winter. Her jaw seriously dropped open. Like BFing past 1 was something she had never heard of. I kind of chuckled but moved on.
So, we go to the scale and he weighs in at 17 pounds 12 ounces (wahooooo) and she gets so excited that he only has 2.5 more pounds to go until he can forward face. I told her that, no, that was at least another year off, more likely 2. Again, the jaw dropped. Since she was a medical professional I didn't launch into my usual line about the recommendations changing, etc, but I just couldn't help but laugh at her reaction. I'm going to mention it to my pedi when I see her next (we are casual friends) just because I wouldn't be surprised if this nurse talked about the crazy lady she had in with the tiny 1 year old. I know the regular nurses know the current recommendations and our pedi office is very strongly supportive of rear facing until 2 so I'm not worried, but her reaction was priceless!
Re: Amusing nurse reaction
He's doing pretty good with weight gain. Timmy was only 18lbs when he was 18 months.
