So a co-worker of mine told me she was naming her baby Ian by honoring her deceased brother ( whose name was Ian). Except then she began to tell me her brother's name was not spelled Ian, it was spelled EIN. She is going to name her child Ein. Awful. Barf. I looked at her in shock and had to look the other way I was in such disbelief.

Yes. Exactly what I thought. We work in a hospital as well and that's the first thing I thought of. I like the meaning behind the name, but the poor baby is going have to spell his name for everyone his whole life. When I see it on paper I wouldn't even pronounce it Ian.
Ian is great- Ein is not. I know she's honouring family, but sometimes when a family name is a butchered spelling of a real, fairly common name, I feel like you should go with the correct spelling to make life easier on your poor kid. Either that or stick it in the middle name spot.
Also, I would not pronounce that like Ian at first glance. I looked at it and just saw the German word for 'one' (eins) pronounced like 'nines' without the N.
Totally! LOL
I actually thought one, but I read, write, and speak German regularly.
It's nice that she wants to honor her brother.
This was my thought too. EIN is pronounced "eye-n" not "ee-an". What a clusterf.
DH and I just died.
Already thinking about baby #3
Yeah, Eoin is pronounced O-in. Like Owen.
