cloth diaper question

This is a double post.

Question for you...

Is the diaper cover what keeps the urine from leaking on to clothes and such?

I ask because I'm considering using a  diaper cover on top of some existing (cheapie) cloth diapers to assist in potty training my son (who is now 2.6).  I can't do the naked method.. but I really need him to feel uncomfortable when he goes so he understands that he needs to be using the potty.

I've had some cloth diapers for the longest time... just cheapie gerber ones that I've used as burp clothes.  So I would fold those into the diaper cover.  Is that silly?  I've never actually cloth diapered before so I'm not even sure if this is logical.

    If you have the Gerber cloth diapers from BRU or the like you probably have prefolds or flats.  In either case, yes, you need a cover to keep his cloths dry.  If you go on YouTube you can find a ton of videos that show you how to fold a cloth diaper depending on what you have.  Good luck!

    I am guessing you have prefolds. You can fold that into three, length-wise and then lay in the cover. That said, the Gerber kind are not known for being very absorbent. I don't know if they would hold toddler-level urine volume. A cover prevents clothes from getting wet, but it cannot contain pee if the fabric is totally saturated. You may have to play around with water to test how much volume the cloth can hold. Also, if you have been using fabric softener or dryer sheets when using them as burp cloths, you will need to strip the diapers to get off the chemicals from those things, as they cause repelling rather than absorption (which will also lead to leaks).

    Thanks for the replies. 

    I don't  need them super absorbant because I plan to take him to potty frequently- I just need him to really feel the wetness during this process without a full peeing session on the sofa- lol.

    We used the gerber cloth training pants with an unstuffed pocket diaper as a cover on to stop the leaks.

    You could buy diaper covers and just fold the gerber prefolds into thirds and lay in the cover. I like flip and thirsties covers. Thirsties have a double leg gusset if leaks are an issue for you. I would just stick to your cheap prefolds, too, because as far as discomfort goes, a lot of the modern prefolds and inserts actually keep baby feeling drier than sposies.
