Babies: 9 - 12 Months

NO table foods, help!

I mostly lurk here, but I am starting to stress about my DD's refusal to eat any table foods. She gags and cries when presented with anything other than rice cereal, pured baby food, or BM I EP. Is something wrong? Any suggestions for what to try?

Re: NO table foods, help!

  • I doubt anything is wrong, some kids are just a little fussy, or take some time to get used to new textures.  Have you tried thickening up the purees that you're giving her, or leaving some chunks in them?  I would think that would be a good place to start, and that was how we transitioned from mush to real foods with DD.

  • No reason to worry, I've heard stories of 18 month olds just starting to eat table food.  Purees have enough nutrition if that's all she'll eat.  Ditto PP, try to thicken them up, or cut her super tiny pieces to try.  Have you tried a mesh feeder?  That might give her a new experience to table food as well.  We tried avocado first, because it was already so soft.  His best first foods were Mum Mum crackers and avocado - banana was too hard, so was cooked apple.  Maybe try regular applesauce, then move to chunky applesauce?

  • I might try adding diced peaches or pears in her rice cereal.  Cut them up pretty small at first and gradually increase the size.

I found sweet peas and black beans to be good starter foods for DD.  They are a good size/shape and are they are firm enough for her pick up independently, but soft enough to smush in her mouth.

I guess my suggestion would be to keep trying a little each day, but don't get overwhelmed.  If it continues, discuss with pediatrician.
  • Thanks for the reassuring responses, I appreciate the good suggestions as well. You have helped me more than you know.

  • I went though this same thing...all of these people with babies the same age as mine or even younger talk about how their kids eat chunks of this and that, stuff off of their own plates, etc.

Friday my son choked...and I mean really choked...not breathing, attempting to gasp for air, etc CHOKING.  It was extremely scary for what seemed like forever.  He choked on the stage 3 spagetti from Gerber, which has chunks and pieces of food in it.  The tiniest piece of pasta is what I assume he choked on.

Once he finally vomited and began screaming I decided this was not worth it...he is not ready and maybe all of the other people have more talented kids than mine or maybe they are not telling the full truth about what their kids eat.  We will stick with purees, even the thicker ones, but nothing with things he actually needs to CHEW to be able to swallow.  He watches us eat, etc...he is just not ready, and that doesnt make me a bad Mom.

  • My son was the same way. Mum Mums were horrible, he choked then threw up. Stage three was horrible as well. He just wanted to swallow and couldn't do it with chunks. He would eat puffs. So that's what he ate along with his stage two. A week ago I started him with toast. I offered him toast and just put some of his stage two fruit on it as a spread instead of butter. I cut off crust and cut it into small pieces. Pizza cutter works miracles. I did this every day before his oatmeal for breakfast. He started to love it. I have since added some pears, peas, watermelon and today he ate a piece of French toast without syrup before his oatmeal. All of this he can now eat but third stage he will still gag and throw up everything. I also gave him a ritz cracker. He loved it. They crumble easier than Mum Mums and he could get it down.
I was like you and starting to panic especially when it seemed like everyone else's kids were eating like champs. For what it's worth, I have a 14 year old and a 12 year old and do not remember struggling like this with them. Our little guy will be ten months old on the first and weighs 26 lbs so I knew he would have to figure this out eventually or else he was going to lose some rolls. :
