Baby kidnapped from hospital!!!

WOW, i saw this article on another  board and thought i'd share...deff will make me more aware of who has their hospital ID tags on when they take the baby!!! Although, that still seems weird to me...how the heck did she get IN the maternity floor? at our hospital you have to get buzzed in as soon as you get off the elevator on the maternity floor!

Re: Baby kidnapped from hospital!!!

  • Some hospitals do not have the buzzing in rule. I've been to quite a few visiting friends and just walked right in. A little unnerving. But just be aware and know you're hospitals rules and regulations. Ours has the locked double doors and a nurse at the entrance. Also, be aware of nurses name tags. The woman who took baby was wearing a visitor badge which looks different. It's ok to be paranoid and request to see the badge if you cannot see it. Because policy is to have it hanging above the waist at all times. Also, no one should be requesting you to take a shower and leaving your baby. If something came up, just make sure someone else, DH, or MIL or someone is still in the room while you're in the restroom.

  • Our hospital was really serious when it came to security.  We had a security guard walk with us from L & D to postpartum after DD was born and she wore an ankle bracelet the entire time that I think alerted the staff if she was being brought outside of the floor.  Can't be too careful!
  • In my hospital, you can't cut off a baby's ID tag without sounding alarms and ward doors locking, nor can you take an IDed baby within 10 feet of an exit without alarms sounding and doors locking. Also, all babies room in with their mom.

  • How does that happen?!?!? My hospital is crazy in Maternity. You have to be buzzed in, on an approved list to be there, and the mom and baby and daddy all wear the same bands. The only people allowed out of the room w/baby are mom & dad (or nurse of course) and if the baby gets too close to the doors on the maternity floor is makes this terrible buzzing noise.

There is no way babies are getting switched or taken at my hospital, how aren't all hospitals doing this?!?!

  • I live in Pittsburgh and saw this on the news yesterday.  This hospital is nicknamed "baby factory" because around 10,000 babies are born there every year.  I have not been there, but I cannot imagine how this could have happened.  I read about it today online (local newspaper) and it said the suspect bought medical scrubs around the corner and posed as a nurse and was lurking around the parents' room around discharge time.  The legit nurse was about to discharge them and this unknown "nurse" came in the room and said the baby needed to be tested once more before leaving and said she'd be right back.  Um, hello? Red flag anyone?  I mean, in such a large hospital, I guess it's possible that the legit nurse doesn't know every person that works there, but it also said in the article that a couple other nurses on duty questioned her because she didn't have a hospital ID on her. As the parents, didn't they think it was odd that this person they never saw before just came out of nowhere and claimed the baby needed looked at again when they were getting ready to be discharged?  Red flags everywhere if you ask me and the hospital should be sued.  That is unacceptable.

  • I'd sue the fluck out of that hospital.

  • Our hospital has key padded doors to the maternity ward and they keep they baby in the room with you after they've done everything they need to. It's one of the things that I love about this hospital, baby will hardly leave my side when I'm there as long as she's healthy and doing well on her own
  • With our first two kids, we never let them out of our sight...if a test needed done at 2am, my husband got out of bed and went. Our kids slept in our room the whole time. It will be the same with this little girl. It's just not worth the risk, regardless of policies a hospital has in place!

  • I honestly feel like people should get a life sentence for something like this.  If you're scumbag enough to kidnap a child, you just shouldn't be out in the world again, period.

    this.

  • I am actually giving birth at this hospital later this year. This is scary, but, from watching the story on the news there were so many things that didn't initially add up. I am so glad they found the baby. I know my child will not be leaving my sight and I will make sure that everyone is properly identified.

  • The woman was questioned by nurses but she claimed to be the sister of the baby's mother, which is why nobody second guessed her standing right outside the room. She walked into the room with the nurse and as soon as the nurse left she told the parents she had to take the baby somewhere. This is why the mother thought she was a nurse. The mother was ready to be discharged, which is why the ankle monitor was already off. At that point the nurse will tell the parents that they are responsible for keeping the baby with them at all times.
