Any tips on washing hair?

With the exception of infancy, my DD has always hated her hair being washed. The water bothers her ears and eyes and she'll scream the entire process. We have tried baths w/ a pitcher to rinse, baths w/ her head leaned under a running faucet and showers. Her head is tilted back and she'll cover her ears while I'll cover her eyes with my hands. After 3.5 yrs, I'm sick of the screaming and totally considering buying her goggles & ear plugs but I foresee this being a comfort issue.

Any tips? How do you make the experience more pleasurable for your LO?

  • Have you tried letting her wash it too?  or wash her dolls hair?  DD washes Dora hair or her horse's hair (don't ask. ..) while I do hers?  I also let her pick what days we wash her hair (if we really need to wash her hair, I'll give her lots of advance notice).  Or tried doing it in the shower?  I give her lots of options, but I still end up using at least 2 washclothes everytime we wash hair so she can cover her eyes.  She's normally ok w/ it in/around her ears as long as I do it super quick.

  • I've seen those foam visor things. I would also try a shower.

  • Both of my kids hated having their hair washed, but especially DS, who has some mild sensory issues.  Baths always ended in tears.

I finally found an awesome, cheap, low-tech solution.  I got one of those cheapie foam sun visors that little old ladies wear on the beach.  It's waterproof, dries easily, hangs on a shower hook, keeps water out of ears and eyes, and -- best of all -- cost about fifty-nine cents.

  • DS uses a small dry hand towel to cover his face and ears....no issues since.  Just for your sake, I would cut DDs hair in a short style (easier for you to wash.)

I tried this tonight and it worked great!  Thanks for the idea!

  • Sorry I never really had these issues with my kids that lasted more than a few bath/showers.  They do sell visor like things for kids to wear while getting their hair washed so maybe try one of those.
