Hgb A1C with initial labs?

Anyone have a Hgb A1C drawn with your initial labs to screen for diabetes?  This is apparently my doctor's new standard.  Well, they want you to be less than 5.7 and mine came back right at 5.7 so they want me to see a diabetes educator.  As far as I know, my value indicated pre-diabetes.  I don't mind changing my diet.  I just don't want to have to do fingersticks.

I know I will do what they tell me because I want to do what's best for my LO, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

  • I have to do finger sticks one hour after eating until the end of my pregnancy. They just want to make sure if I need insulin that I get it as early as possible.

  • It just sounds cautious (and not a totally bad idea). Rather than wait until 28 weeks to do the glucose test, why not check for the baseline now, YKWIM?

Just like blood pressure in pregnancy. If it's high at 36 weeks, you have to see what the baseline is... is it just chronic hypertension, or is it more like pre-eclampsia or gestational hypertension?

If they have you check your sugar, it probably wouldn't be that often. Heck, if it was going to prevent complications with my pregnancy, I'd check all day long.

  • Why don't you want to do the finger prick?

IME, the only way to know what your blood sugar is to get blood drawn constantly, or do the finger prick. I was diagnosed with GD early with my first PG and with this one as well (failed the one hour at my initial work up). Monitoring your blood sugar will only help you & your baby. Unless you want to give birth to a 10lb+ baby because the baby couldn't process the sugar you passed him/her while they were in utero.

Check out the high risk board. There are lots of ladies over there with GD. Their experiences may help. That said, I was ok with the finger pricking immediately. I was terrified of giving myself the insulin, though. But after the first few times it was fine. Better than fine. I felt like a junkie on Intervention. LOL. I just kept reminding myself that I had to do it for my daughter. Her blood sugar was fine after I gave birth and my GD was gone immediately (although, I clearly do have some insulin issues).

    Good luck!

  • To be honest, I don't know why I have a problem with the finger sticks.  I'm not afraid of needles.  I think I'm just in denial.  I know I will get over it for the sake of my LO.  Thanks for the responses.  I may check out the high risk board.
