I need some R&B/hip hop music that the kids can listen to.
When we are in the car, I stay away from the "KISS FM" station that plays that music because I don't like them listening to (or singing!) most of the lyrics. But, I realized, especially for Carrot, it is part of her culture. She was singing a completely appropriate rap song the other day, and then got all embarrassed. I don't want her to be in our house.
Can you help me make a playlist?
cuban shuffle, whip my hair, black eyed peas....

Have you heard of Common Sense Media? I find their stuff very helpful, although their ratings tend to be pretty conservative in my opinion, especially the age recommendations. But they are clear that it is a "know your kid" situation.

Also, bravo on being sensitive around this issue for Carrot, I really admire you for that.

I have no idea - but Commonsense Media has some good ideas. I have found their reveiws to be pretty on track (I obsessively look up movies/tv shows/video games.)

Thanks! I have used commonsense media for screening movies, but didn't think about their lists for music!
I am sure there is lots more, if I screen stuff (which I will, and try to recollect my younger, slightly cooler brain). But, I needed a list I can go to itunes and make a CD or playlist like tomorrow.
I know what I am doing when the kids are on their visit today!

a few ideas-
- how about something like kids bop? they edit the songs but kids may still feel like they are listening to the real thing since they are so similar (at least my cousin was cool with it at about 10/11 years old) and its all the newest stuff thats on he radio
- purchasing the clean versions of songs they already like on itunes or amazon, or purchasing the entire cd, that way you can maybe even make a mix of the songs from the album that you are ok with
- choosing an artist is difficult, few are completely 'clean' and there's always some mention of sex or violence, but i think neo-soul may be a good place to start for r&b that perhaps more poetically talks about sex (romance?) and hopefully it just goes over her head lol
I have a song recommendation... Young Homie by Chris Rene. He talks about we don't need to drink, do drugs and the way to fix the world is to put the hate down. His album is not out yet but the song is very clean from what I remember. It does have one line that is edited to remove the *s* word but with my nephew we just say stuff. I would definitely listen to it first to make sure the content is approved by you. Here is a link to the lyrics but the download we have is edited for one line with foul language.

I also second the kid bop music. They definitely have all the current pop/hip-hop songs redone for kids and the CD won't drive you crazy as well. Also don't forget the old school Will Smith or Lil Romeo ablums. They were very clean if I am remembering correctly.
M laughs at me and tells me to start editing songs now as if these LO's are anything like me it's what they will listen to (she hates rb/hip-hop).
