Pets being extra affectionate?

We have 3 cats and 1 dog.  2 of the cats are female, yet it is my male cat who has been extra affectionate lately.  He especially wants to cuddle me in the middle of the night.  I don't know if I wake up more because I have to pee or because the cat is rubbing his head against my face or stepping on my chest as he's trying to cuddle me.  Anyone else notice a change in their pets behavior now that they're pregnant?  Any suggestions on how to keep him from waking me up so much without having to lock him out of the room.  All the animals sleep in our bedroom at night so trying to lock 1 out wouldn't work.  Any thoughts?

Re: Pets being extra affectionate?

  • YES!   We have several pictures of my smallest dog laying ON my stomach, which he normally doesn't do.  My large guys has been following me around non-stop, and he normally follows DH instead.

  • Yes! My male cat is ALWAYS trying to cuddle with me now. Every time I lay down or sit down, he's right there. Follows me around non-stop too!

I can't even go to the bathroom alone. If I close the bathroom door behind me, he's scratching at it or trying to open it up himself.

  • They say pets, especially cats, can sense it. My neighbor told me that is how she found out she was pregnant with her 3rd, her cat would not leave her alone.

My cat is always like that anyways, so nothing has changed yet. She always has to be on my lap if I am sitting down anyways, she's super lurchy.

  • We've noticed changes in one of my dogs, my normally very aloof min pin. All the sudden he just wants belly rubs and cuddles and he's fine being held. Normally he runs if you try to hold him in your lap. The other is a super affectionate lap dog, no changes there!

  • The girls (2 big dogs) are now sleeping on the floor near my side of the bed.  My pit won't even ask for permission to crawl into bed, she's just hopping up there and cuddling.  They follow me everywhere and pre pregnancy they usually followed DH around the house, or did their own thing.

  • Both dog and cat are usually pretty affectionate, but the cat has been sleeping on my torso while I'm in bed, and sometimes I can't even feel it because I'm sleeping so hard. She's been extra vocal and purry around me lately too. :)

  • I have two cats and two greyhounds and they were all over me during my first pregnancy. I was seriously tripping over them. Its nice to have them cuddlebut as u get bigger and sweatier its not so fun
  • The fact that my dog was following me around so much was the first suspicion/indication that I might be pg. She would not leave me alone and DH started joking that I was pg, turns out we were! She followed me around constantly when I was pg with both my daughters, and would snuggle really close when I breastfed on the couch. She is super protective of me and I can be sure there will be no bird, squirl or chipmunk attacks any time soon!

  • When ever I have been PG my animals have always become more affectionate. If I sit down they are allow top of me if I get up they follow. I can't even pee without them following me, my kids give me privacy lol

  • Yep! I have 3 male cats...one in particular who normally doesn't pay much attention to me is obsessed with me when I'm pregnant. The second I pee on a stick he knows I swear and he can't get enough of me. It's hysterical.

  • Our dog has always been super affectionate, but he is even more so now! When we're in bed, he has to be touching me in some way. When we're eating dinner, he lays on my feet under the table. And, of course, he is right next to me anytime I'm on the couch. It is so sweet!

  • YES!!!  We have three dogs...two of them have not changed their behavior at all, but our border collie mix pound dog who has always been the more caring one has been soooooo sweet.  Scout normally sleeps outside of our bedroom...we noticed two weeks before we found out that he kept trying to come in our room at night...at first we let him but my DH has terrible allergies and our newest dog already sleeps in our room because she is still not trusted to roam the house.  So we had to start denying him (broke my heart).  Since then he sleeps DIRECTLY outside our bedroom door and when I am lying on the couch, he always comes and lies right under me.  My DH and I made the connection to RIGHT when I got pregnant is when he started trying to sleep in our room.  SOOOOO sweet.  I love my furbabies!

  • Our English Bulldog is dumber than a box of rocks...she is clueless.  But our male cat has been really sweet to me lately.  Usually he wants very little to do with me...he loves my husband...but the past couple days he has been real sweet to me?

  • Not yet, but my parrot always tries to mate with me (my belly) starting sometime in the 3rd trimester. She is always super excited when the baby arrives.

Wow that sounds terrible! I don't know what I would do...

We don't have any pets, but reading this post made me realize that when I go to my parents' house, their dog has been more attentive to me than usual. I didn't know pets did that!

  • It is possible, definitely for cats. When I was taking a guided hike in the rainforest in Costa Rica, the guide asked if any of us are pregnant. He said the only times he ever saw big cats there is when there was a pregnant woman in the group. They can smell the extra hormones or the pheramones that we put out. I'm sure it works the same in little cats! I know mine will not leave me alone these last few nights.

  • We have a very affectionate golden retriever... but lately he has been even more affectionate with me. One night recently he hopped into our bed and rested his head on my stomach. DH and I got a kick out of thinking what he's going to do when the baby starts moving in there! haha

He has also been following me around the house more than normal and I get more attention than DH now! haha

  • Very interesting!  Thanks for that little factoid.      : )

  • With my first pregnancy, I think my cat sensed it before we even knew.  She was NEVER a lap cat - would jump off immediately if you tried to put her on your lap.  Then, all of a sudden, she'd jump on my lap and curl up there for hours.  A week later - BFP.

She hasn't really done that yet this time.  Sorry, no suggestions about your sleeping buddy.  There may not be much you can do!

  • My cat has always been affectionate and I have not noticed him being more affectionate than usual not that I am pg. For your cat, I suggest that you put one of your dirty shirts on the floor for him to sleep on. You will probably have to put him on it, pet him. Then when he jumps on your bed,tap his nose a couple times and put him on the floor. This may take several attempts before he gets it.
