March 2013 Moms

may have blood clotting disorder

So I posted below that my doctor has been playing phone tag with me the pat 24 hrs or so.  I assumed this was to discuss yesterday's ultrasound.

Nope.  The ultrasound was perfect.

Apparently my first round of bloodwork was not.  Apparently I had an elevated T Pallidum, which made them test for Sphilis.  Negative.  Twice.

Now they want to send me this afternoon to run an Anticardiolipin Igm.  If that's elevated, I'll have to go on Heparin or Lovenox injections.  I guess there are several blood clotting disorders, so she spoke in a general sense, unsure of which one it might be.  Just that I may have tiny clots running through my blood

Apparently these levels are sometimes high in women who have reoccurring fetal losses, and people who have thrombosis, blood clots, and things such as pulmonary embolisms.

It will take about a week for the results from today's test to come back, as the blood has to be sent to a bigger lab.  They can't run the test in the hospital.

Is anyone familiar with any of this?

My heart is very heavy.  I have gone through so much to get as far as being able to TTC (4 heart surgeries), and now this.  I just hope everything is going to be okay.

  • I am sorry you have to go through this!  Just trust your doctor and take it one day at a time.  There are ways to treat these things.  Sending lots of love your way.

  • I don't have any advice or experience but I just wanted to say I wish you the best of luck and I hope everything turns out OK. I was thinking of you today and hoping you would update us. Try to stay positive (as much as you can...). It's a great thing that your doctor seems to be on top of this and figured this out. Sending T&P!

  • I am not familiar with clotting disorders, but I know several women on the Pregnant After a Loss Board are on the injections you describe. Unfortunately, for them this discovery was usually not made until after they'd experience one or several losses so it is a good thing that your doctor tested you and will be treating you.

Try to inform yourself, but also try to stay positive.  Remember, the internet can be a scary place filled with worst case scenarios.

  • I don't know if it's exactly the same, but I have a cousin with a blood clotting disorder.  She has two beautiful children and no history of loss.  I hope your doctor has some great suggestions for how to proceed and set your mind at ease!

    Hugs!

Great suggestion. I just posted over there.  Thanks!

  • I'm sorry you found out more disappointing news :-( I will say though that when I had my 1st I spent a lot of time on the high risk board since he had extreme IUGR and it seemed like a lot of women didn't find out that they had clotting issues until they were pregnant (most commonly MTHFR clotting issues). I know when they were trying to determine the cause of the IUGR for us they tested me for this. If you do end up needing the lovenox or other shots I would also post over at high risk since its a common situation over there (don't stop posting here too though!) T&P's that it ends up being nothing!

  • I don't have any experience with this but I want you to know that you're in my thoughts. I think it is a really good thing that your doctor is following up with this and being so proactive. I really hope everything works out for you. It must be heartbreaking to have gone through so many health issues in the past and to know that there could be future struggles for you.

  • I don't know anything about the medicines you are on.  My doctor also thought I had a blood clotting disorder.  I had to have a DNA test and also another blood test to test levels in my blood for clotting.  Turns out I am a carrier for a blood clotting issue.  However, my levels for clotting are low, so there may be some things they do differently with the delivery.  My doctor referred me to a hematologist.  If your OB thinks you have a blood clotting disorder, I would see a hematologist immediately because that is their specialty.  Also seems like you would have known if you  had a serious clotting issue if you have had 4 surgeries, as it is something people usually find out they have when they have surgery (according to my hematologist).

Best of luck to you, I am sure everything will end up fine.  Just trust in your doctors and know that they are caring for you and the baby.   Keep us updated, will be thinking of you!

  • Well I'm glad baby is good!  Sorry you have to have this added stress though.  I'm sure they will be able to figure everything out and get you squared away.  I also have a blood disorder, but mine is the opposite of yours - I don't clot!  It's called ITP (Immune Thrombocenapenic Perpera).  My doctor is just monitoring me closely (lots of blood work) and will be cautious of it during labor to get the placenta out quickly to prevent hemorrhage.  I'm sure once you have a complete diagnosis your doctor will go over a plan with you.

Good luck and keep up updated for sure!!

  • I am sorry for the upsetting news.  I hope you get answers soon.  I have a couple of friends who need lovenox but had uncomplicated pregnancies otherwise.  It sounds like you are getting good care.  Hang in there.
  • I am on lovenox injections 40mg once a day due to a prev blood clot. If you do have to do the shots the lady's on the high risk board are really helpfull there is also a weekly lovenox check in that has injection tips and other support. Good luck. I don't have any experience with the clotting disorder but if you have any questions just let me know

  • I have Factor V Leiden and take baby aspirin every day. After my second Mac we did genetic testing and it found that plus the fact that I don't properly metabolize folic acid. Coincidence, maybe.....but this is my third pregnancy, first successful this far and the first that I've been on this regimine. I'm sure your Dr is being cautious w the Lovenox and they should periodically monitor tour blood for clotting times. Good luck :-)
