GD ladies come in, and I need some advice please

Hi!
I recently failed my 3-hour glucose test, failing hours one, two, and three. I'm 25 wks with triplets. My nurse called to tell me this at 11:45 which I'm thankful for, but then left the office and won't return until Wednesday. Here's what I need to know.

1. Any GD ladies our there have good online resources I can learn about GD from?
2. My nurse wants me to see a "diabetes educator" but the place near me can't see me until abut 2 weeks before deliver, obviously not going to work. Would a nutritionist be able to help me too? I am seeing a nutritionist, would that suffice? I left a message to refer me to someone else as well.
3. Any helpful hints for using a glucometer? She called one into my pharmacy, but I have yet to pick it up.

Thanks ladies!
Have a great weekend!

  • A nutritionist/dietician will provide you with a meal plan based on your body and how many babies you are carrying.  If you can't get in with that diabetes educator, see if your nutritionist can help you or ask the OB for another referral.

They'll have you check your blood sugar at least four times a day (fasting, after breakfast, after lunch and after dinner).  The best thing I learned from the diabetes center was to prick my finger on the side.  It doesn't hurt as much as pricking it on the tip.

If after following the diet, you cannot get your levels with the recommended range they might prescribe a pill or insulin depending on what your doctor prefers.  I've been on a pill since 25ish weeks I think.

    Good luck!

  • Check out the High Risk Pregnancy board -- the GD ladies there have very practical ideas about meal ideas, etc.

Definitely get referred to someone else.  This is my second round of GD, and this time I met with a nutritionist who works in a diabetes center.  She was able to cover everything a diabetes educator (who in my experience is a nurse) would have covered in the initial meeting.

The glucometer is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.  Ditto PP about pricking the side of your finger because it hurts less.  Also, you will wipe your finger with an alcohol wipe before pricking yourself:  make sure the alcohol dries completely before pricking yourself, because if it is not dry, it can affect your test result.

All in all, GD is very manageable, even if it can be frustrating at times.  I am able to eat ice cream every day, so my sanity stays intact :)

    Good luck!
