Diagnostic testing?

So I'm disappointed that those new tests are not appropriate for twins (Materniti21, harmony, etc). Please tell me what testing you had done? With my last pg, my NT scan was perfect and didn't find out until end of 16 weeks that we had 1 in 9 chance of trisomy 18. We had scheduled an amnio, but beforehand during the u/s we found out the baby had passed away.  Needless to say, I definitely want to do testing, but scared of amnio or cvs for twins. Please share what you did.

Re: Diagnostic testing?

  • I had the maternit21 done with no problem. My genetic counselor told me that twins only decreased its efficacy by a point or two.

  • That's interesting! I called all the companies and Maternit21 is the only one that said you can use...but they have only studied it on 25 sets of twins. The good news is that it was 100% for those 25, but the sample size is too small to be conclusive. Regardless, I'm glad to hear you got good results!

  • We did not do testing.  This was partially b/c dr. had asked if we'd terminate if there was an issue - if not, then it wasn't worth the risk/cost to do any testing.  He also stated that because we'd be seeing an MFM and having frequent u/s and 3d u/s's that we'd likely see ahead of time based on cranial measurements/etc. if there were a problem.

I don't know if this relates to your specific concerns, but this was our experience.

  • I just spoke with the genetic counselor my OB referred me to and they have been using MaterniT21 as an option for women carrying twins.  I think my plan is to get that test done right around 10 weeks, wait for the results and then decide what, if anything, to do next.
