seafood question...

My friend and I are going to a seafood buffet tonight. They will have other things besides just seafood that I know I can eat, but what types of seafood are safe to eat? I think I had heard cooked shrimp was ok...I haven't had any seafood since I found out I was pregnant. Just wondering what you ladies can tell me about this...TIA! :

Re: seafood question...

  • Any sort of small fish, the smaller the fish the less mercury they consume.  I'd stay away from swordfish, shark, and tuna. The link is to the Mayo Clinic that gives you a list.

  • Most seafood is fine to eat.  Shellfish and smaller fish, like the PP recommended are fine.  I eat a lot of fish, being in So. Fla.  I ate fish through both of my pregnancies.  Some of my favorites are Mahi, Hog fish, grouper, pompano, stone crabs, lobster, shrimp, clams and mussels.

  • Just avoid swordfish, tuna ( ahi tuna, canned tuna is fine), and shark. Most shellfish and white fish/salmon is fine.

  • My OB said no shark, swordfish, or tilefish, but <12oz per week is fine.

  • I limit my seafood to 1-2 times a week and like PP said, smaller fish. I love crab and fish tacos and I still eat tuna as long as it's not albacore.
  • you can google lists of seafood you should stay away from while pregnant to be sure, but my doctor told me I was fine having Shrimp and Crab and other shellfish

She said just to limit it to twice a week and try not to go over that but it was fine.

I've had crab and shrimp intermittently throughout my pregnancy, I have several different news letters about each week of my pregnancy though and one of the more recent ones ( i think from last week (20 weeks)) said that eating low mercury seafood would be good for baby's development. idr which site it was from, but it was either Similac moms, or the baby center, or the bump.

I don't really eat fish, but I know salmon is also good for you to have

  • Thanks ladies! So crab legs are fine then? I assume that the shrimp has to be cooked and not like shrimp cocktail?? Sorry, I am at work and am leaving right after and don't have time to google. That is why I thought I would ask you ladies...i appreciate the help!

Shrimp cocktail is fine.  All shrimp that you get will be cooked--they don't serve raw shrimp, even in sushi.  Crab legs are fine too.

  • Any shellfish at all are fine, as long as they are cooked. The main ones to avoid are tuna, tilefish, shark...the big ones.
