Repeat Questions

I was browsing the FFFC and thought some of you ladies may want to post "repeat" questions.  Things we've already discussed but you either weren't paying attention at the time or forgot or whatever.

I figured if we had one post - you could post here & we could answer as needed.  Plus it's slow right now so why not?

I saw a few of you had hospital bag questions!

Re: Repeat Questions

  • I have a hospital bag question!  When you consider packing your hospital bag and the baby things you want to put in it, what are some considerations in packing a pacifier for the baby?  I feel like I have almost EVERY pacifier known to man, and I'm afraid it would be odd to show up with all of them at the hospital.  I know the hospital often use the MAM and the Soothie...is there one in particular that you personally have taken that is more successful than the other?  Latex vs Silicone?  I know this is one of those things that varies baby to baby per the baby's preference, and I'm not trying to push the pacifier too hard.  I just wanted to at least pack one just in case the baby seemed to be the type to take one.  None of my others liked pacifiers, and I'm not sure if its just the type I chose or if pacifiers in general are just a "roll of the dice" type thing.  I have playtex, gumdrop, mam, soothies, latex, silicone, etc.  Which one are you taking in your hospital bag for baby and why?

I have one! I'm sure it's been asked before, and of course I know that no one on here is a doctor, but I also don't want to bother my doctor/nurses needlessly.

How much swelling & water retention would it take for you to call?

Since my last appt., a week ago, I am up nearly 6 pounds (as of this am). I eat pretty well, and walk 2 miles every day. Also, my hands ballooned up like crazy yesterday. They had gone down a bit by the afternoon, but they are horrible again this morning, I can't even make a fist.

I haven't had high BP at any of my appointments, and my vision is okay, just a dull headache.

So basically it could be totally normal pregnancy stuff, or not. I'm torn.

I'm just bringing one - the MAM silicone pacifier.  We have either the MAM or NUK brand pacifier.  DS liked them so I'm assuming DS #2 will as well.

I would call. It's what they are there for.
  • Ooooo I have one.  I need to get a new breast pump (my first one broke) and I'm not sure if I want another electric one or not.

Has anyone used a manual hand pump? How well do they work compared to an electric pump?

I'd take into consideration the temp outside and how much water you've been drinking along with how much sodium you've been eating.

But, I'd call the doctors office and let them know, see if they're concerned enough to bring you in or just wait to see you at your next appointment.  At the very least, they'd note it on your file to discuss with you at the appointment.

Thanks. I think I'll call the nurse and leave a message. I don't think it warrants an emergency page anything. I have been drinking water like crazy, but we've also been eating out a lot, so I'm sure I'm getting a lot more sodium than I usually would.

I'm not sure if this is a repeat question or not, but what do you ladies do to help with back pain? Specifically when you are at work and laying down/resting isn't an option. Just tough it out or do you take tylenol? I've been having upper right back pain since 8am and I have to be at work until 5-530. It's been pretty much constant all day, I did take one tylenol several hours ago but it didn't help and I'm hesitant to take more.

Are you watching your posture?  I've noticed my back hurts more when I slump forward.  When I notice it hurting I adjust so that my back is resting against the back of my computer chair.  I try to sit up straight so there isn't so much strain.

Plus, I have always carried stress in my shoulders so if work is stressing me out - that's one of the first places I can feel it.

Call if it will make you feel better. For me, I swelled like crazy with DS and my doctor wasn't worried at all because I had no other signs of pre e so I wouldn't call for just swelling. Take some Tylenol now and call in an hour or so to give it time to work. That way you can tell them if the headache went away or not.

DS used the hospital Soothie and we played around with what worked best after we got home. He never had a problem taking any of them (except the Wubbanub, he never liked) but I found some stayed in his mouth better.

Does your office have eurgonomic chairs? Last time when I worked in the office, we had a few eurgo chairs that got passed around by the pregnant chicks. It really helped. Or bring a small pillow for the small of your back. Get up and walk around about once an hour.

Call the doctor. That's pretty bad swelling and when you add in the headache, it doesn't sound better. Get checked. GL!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have a call into the nurse, hopefully it's just normal pregnancy swelling made worse by the heat...

  • I'm sure this is a repeat question so here it goes........are bottle warmers really necessary?  I am planning on BF and pumping.........when touring a daycare they mentioned that we are to provide a bottle wamer.  Don't some babies take bottles at room temp or can you use warm water/crockpot?  Sorry.......FTM here and I'm clueless :)

I never had a bottle warmer. In the beginning to heat up bm or formula, I just heated up water in a mug and put the bottle in it.  Now, I will use our Keurig. Our daycare used a crockpot. If you are using powder ormula, I would suggest getting baby used to room temp bottles since that is the easiest. The formula that worked best for DS only came in Ready To Feed so it had to be refrigerated. Also, if you are pumping, the bottles have to be kept cold. Around 6mo, I transitioned DS into drinking straight from the fridge. He didn't have any problems with it.

I am bringing one soothie and one dr browns prevent.  I have a couple others at home but i'm not planning on bringing them all to the hospital.   I chose those two because they are totally different in shape so it will give me an idea of what kind he likes if any.

  • I just read in my baby care book (written by pediatricians) that bottle warmers are definitely optional and it's not even completely necessary to warm the bottle at all. As long as you try to stay consistent w/ the temp. of each bottle (do either all warm or all cold) you're baby will get used to either way. I'm thinking your daycare meant that if you want your baby's bottle to be heated you need to provide your own warmer? Otherwise maybe they'll just skip it and feed as is.

I never used a bottle warmer. We just put hot water in a bowl and either warmed the BM from the fridge or defrosted frozen BM in that bowl. DS had no issues with room temp milk.
