Is this tacky? re: baby shower favors

My mom is super excited to throw me a shower tomorrow with some family members and family friends. Small group--maybe around 12 people.

Anyway, she told me today that her shower favor gifts are $5 gift cards to Wal-Mart. I just feel kinda weird about that! I hate Wal-Mart (even though I won't be getting a card, just personal feelings).

On the one hand, shower favors are usually some cute little things, like bath soaps or spa items. On the other, I can see how those are kinda useless and perhaps people will be glad to get a GC that they can spend on what they want. Buuuuutttt..it's freakin' Wal-Mart! What if people don't want to shop there? Plus, the GC just advertises how much you spent on the favor gift and it just seems weird.

Okay as you can see I'm very conflicted on this! Not that it matters--she's the host and made the decisions, so I'm just gonna sit back and eat cake. What sayest thou?

  • I don't know that it's tacky, although it's definitely strange, but personally I wouldn't want one.  I never, ever shop at Walmart, so it would be a complete waste.

I usually prefer to do some kind of food as favors (chocolate, candies, etc) because they stand a better chance of actually being consumed.

  • It is a little odd. I personally like edible favors - my friend did nail polishes at a shower she just threw I think those things are cute.  Gift cards seem a little odd.  However, if your mom already bought them there isn't much you can do.

  • Yeah I agree that food items are best, but she already got them and told me about it after the fact. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to hurt her feelings. =P
  • She is throwing the shower so she picks what she wants. Honestly, I don't like Wal-mart either but I will go there if I have to and I do shop at Sam's, also you can get gas at Wal-mart by me so I would find a use for the $5. :)

  • It can be dressed up to look cutesy. Cute little bag or ribbons wrapped around the card. Honestly I would prefer a GC to Walmart over baby shaped soap anyday :)

  • The only concern I see with it is that I realize some people don't shop at Wal-Mart. But, I personally do, and it would get used, and I wouldn't find it strange to know the amount spent on the favors. I don't expect favors to be big extravagent purchases. Our favors were cake pops, so those were less than $5 each!

  • I agree that it's not tacky, but just a little weird.

but maybe I only think it's weird b/c I've never been to a shower and received that as a favor before, KWIM?  Maybe your mom is starting a cool new trend :)

But as the last PP's said, I could definitely put it to use.  I hate WM too, but I live in a small town now and that is pretty much my only choice for major grocery/random shopping, so I know I would use it!!

  • Okay I feel a little better now--perhaps not tacky, but a little strange, yet perhaps people will appreciate it anyway. Cool. Thanks!
  • I had never even considered giving gift cards as a favor, but they're definitely more useful than baby shaped soaps or teeny tiny picture frames. I think most people probably do shop at walmart - no matter how much they hate it - or would/could if they had $5 to spend. It's definitely different, but not a bad idea.

  • It's different, yes, but I would much rather get a walmart gift card than lotion or body spray!
