Trying to Get Pregnant

Thoughts on pull out method and IF?

So my gf and I went out for a girls night last night and ended up talking about TTC, she is engaged and she and FI plan on TTC right after they are married. She is worried that they might be IF because they have only been using the pull out method for the last 2 years and haven't gotten KU.

I didn't know what to say to that so I thought I would ask here, is that a good form of BC at all? Or should she be worried about IF? She doesn't chart so I did explain to her that they may have been missing her FW every month but she says they have a very active sex life.

So thoughts ladies?

Re: Thoughts on pull out method and IF?

  • For about 5 months prior to trying for DS we just used the pull out method and never got pregnant.  It wasn't until we actually started trying that I first had a mc and then got pg with DS

Wait, she wants to get pregnant and they're pulling out? The guy has to come *inside* her to get pregnant. Pre-ejaculate doesn't have much sperm in it, but it's always possible. Still, I wouldn't be freaking out about IF if he's not even ejaculating inside her.

Oh sorry I may not have been clear enough on that they are TTA now but after the wedding want to TTC.

  • It's certainly possible to get KU using the pull out method, but, if done correctly (meaning the guy has the discipline to *actually* pull out), it's statistically about as  effective as condoms.  The stat I kept finding when researching this was that
    • Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 4 will become pregnant each year if they always do it correctly.
    • Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 27 will become pregnant each year if they don't always do it correctly.
My DH and I used it for a while.  Of course, since I haven't conceived yet, IF may have played a part in its efficacy, but I'm trying to be optimistic!  So I don't think you're friend should start worrying just yet.

  • My DH relied solely on the pull out method for several years with his previous partner and they never got pregnant...turns out he has no sperm though.  I've actually suggested he call the poor girl and let her let her know that it may not be as reliable a preventative measure as they thought, and she should be more careful in the future! ;-)

  • After 2 1/2 years together this became our primary method of BC because we had said that if we got pregnant it was ok.  Now that we are TTC I would be lying if I said it didn't cross my mind that we may have a problem.  This method worked for us for about 2 1/2 years so I have some concern.  This is only month 2 of TTC for us so it's too soon to tell.

  • If I wanted to avoid pregnancy I wouldn't use Pull n' Pray, myself.

If they are really careful about pulling out then it could be effective. It doesn't necessarily mean they have any IF. If they have bad timing in combination with Pull n' Pray, then it might by default be a functional form of birth control for them. I would not say this is the case with the average couple though.

  • My sister got pregnant 3 times using the pull out method with her husband but all resulted in m/c. So they use condoms now that she finally has a LO. My friend and her H used the pull out method for 6 years and never got pregnant until the first month of not pulling our anymore. Everybody is different!
  • Just to add to what everyone else is saing: there is no reason to worry yet.  But when I had my initial workup with an RE he asked about how long we were "not careful."  So it could become relevant if they later find they have a problem.  But for now, just be glad it worked.
  • My husband and I have used this as our only method of birth control since our first daughter was born almost eleven years ago. We have had no "oops" babies and, up until now, have gotten pregnant easily when planned.

  • Pull out for TTA worked for me! We did that for the last year or so (maybe almost 2 years) and starting July when we got married we decided to TTC and stopped using that method. I never got pregnant using the pull & pray.

I sort of understand her question though because the thought has crossed my mind in regards to "accidental pregnancies" like, "why didn't I ever get accidentally pg?" But CLE's stats from Planned Parenthood clarify that right up.

I'm going to have to agree and say, she has nothing to worry about.

  • most of the girls i know who tried the "pullout method" always ended up getting pregnant-so i wouldnt suggest it

  • Tell her that just because their timing may be good (as in he pulls out properly and they always miss her window) not to worry about IF.

I wouldn't recommend the pull and pray. It's also the most stressful form of BC imo.

  • I would say it is more likely that she's been lucky than that there's IF.

  • Ive known a bunch of people who have used that method... for some they never had an issue, while others had "surprise" BFP's.. I don't think theres anyway of her knowing if they have IF problems without actually TRYING to get pregnant and seeing how it goes!

  • I used the pull out method with my DH for five years and then the first cycle of trying to get pregnant, I got pregnant. So with my experience, it wasn't an issue.

  • I agree with the majority of people here.  Not a reliable method of Birth control.  But she's engaged and desires to get PG at some point so what's the big deal, I suppose.

I do know a couple, friend of friend and adults, who used that method while dating and he didn't pull out once and they got PG.  Now married.  Not your friend's situation though, she's already engaged.

But I honestly thought this was a method young people used.  I'm surprised so many on this board have/are using this method.  Sorry ladies, I wany to feel him 'c' inside me.  And there are other reasons this wouldn't be my method of choice.  But I've learned something new today - it's a pretty common method.
