Taking away the pacifer?

Anyone taken away the pacifer or thinking about it?

I am thinking about it but scared to death about it. I am trying to be realistic here... if I don't take it away before the new baby comes, then it isn't going to happen until I am getting more sleep at night (which could be another year).

Any tips or pointers?

Maybe I am crazy because she is super dependent on it at night.... I have already had the most stressful 2 weeks ever, why not add to it with wakeful nights?!

Re: Taking away the pacifer?

  • I am in no rush at all. She only gets it for naps and nighttime. I'll take it away long before it poses a problem with her teeth but when she's a little older and can be a part of it .... My sister had her doctor tell my niece when she was 2.5 that he had to take her soother away. And that was it. My niece was like "Okay" because the doctor had told her. I may do the same!

  • I am in the exact same place.  Hannah uses it for sleeping only and its only initially when she goes down.  We leave the paci in the crib and I think she is starting to get the idea that the paci is only for sleeping.  I don't know if we will take it away completely before February.

I'm right there with you (minus the new baby on the way, of course!) when it comes to paci anxiety. I am so over the damn thing but DD still loves it at night and during naps. I've weaned her off car rides but I'm afraid to go further. I like my sleep but I don't want to wait too long and have it be really impossible to take it from her.

I'm planning to talk to her pedi about it next week to see what she recommends and then go from there. I'm thinking when we do get rid of it, it'll be cold turkey style or we'll cut off the tip or poke a hole in it. I don't know. See? I'm obviously confused!

I actaully asked her pedi at the last appointment and she basically said whenever you are ready, but didn't suggest taking it away right near the time you take away the bottle and/or are weaning.

I had never heard of cutting off the tip?? That is an interesting idea.

  • I want to, but I don't want to take it away before we deal with teething. He has yet to cut a tooth. Our bedroom is on a different storey, so I don't want to be going up and down the stairs all night because he doesn't have the paci to soothe him when he's teething. We'll see how he does with teething, then figure it out from there. Hopefully by 18 months.

And I was so anti-paci when he was born...
