Power Pumping

I'm 6 weeks PP and I need to start building a supply of breast milk for when I go back to work in a few weeks. I've heard of power pumping but I'm not sure I completely understand it. So far I get that you pump 10 mins on, then 10 mins off - for a whole hour. Do you do this all day? If not, then do you power pump then continue with your normal pumping schedule? I've read that some women only do this a few times a week - is it safe to do it everyday? Thanks in advance for the feed back!

Re: Power Pumping

  • Did you also ask the breastfeeding board? They are very helpful and would probably have some good advice. I didn't power pump, but starting at 4 weeks pp, I pumped after my first feed of the day, usually getting between 3-6 oz. I've been freezing all of these and now have approximately 130oz of frozen milk. Once I start work I'll pump 4 times a day. LO will get one bottle of frozen and the rest fresh when she's at day care.

  • Ive done it once a week for an hour at a time and noticed an increase, like 34 ounces for an increase. I EP and keep track of my supply. I would think if you did it more often and you have the time it would increase your supply more than a few ounces.
